Last Friday, January 23, the Trafficking Survivors Relief Act was officially signed into law — a landmark victory for survivors and advocates across the country.
After nine years of advocacy, this legislation creates a long-overdue pathway for survivors of human trafficking to clear federal criminal records tied directly to their exploitation.
“For far too long, survivors have been forced to bear the weight of criminal records for acts they were coerced into committing under the control of their traffickers. This is a profound injustice. Polaris, alongside advocates across the country, have tirelessly fought to end this harm, and today we are celebrating this long-overdue reform becoming law. By establishing a federal mechanism to clear these unjust records, this law opens the door to real freedom, dignity, and opportunity for survivors nationwide."
-- Megan Lundstrom, CEO of Polaris
This is a historic step forward in protecting survivors at the federal level and an important reminder of what’s possible when survivors’ voices lead the way.
