🔔 Policies at SFSCON 2025 Regulatory frameworks are exerting significant influence on the development and governance of Free and Open Source Software across Europe. SFSCON 2025 will focus on the technical and legal challenges arising from evolving regulations, including compliance with EU policies such as the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), the Product Liability Directive (PLD), accessibility requirements, data governance, user privacy and licensing and contributor rights in FOSS. 📜 Previous SFSCON editions analyzed the CRA’s impact on security assessment protocols, compliance workflows and legal responsibilities for maintainers and organisations. Insights from the EU Next Generation Internet initiatives shed light on emerging trends in legal compliance, REUSE adoption and governance models. What an inspiring #OpenSourceWeek at the United Nations in New York! Honored to have contributed across several sessions in a week filled with energy, diversity, & alignment around #open, #inclusive, & #sovereign digital #ecosystems. Huge thanks to United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies & United Nations Office of Information and Communications Technology for organizing & hosting this milestone gathering! And heartfelt congratulations to Omar Mohsine, Moritz Carl Fromageot, & your amazing teams in particular Mithusha Kajendran and Zeina Hassan, for unfolding such a smooth & high-impact experience that brought together the global open source community across sectors. A few highlights: 🔹 1. Pre-conference workshop on #OpenSourceAI as a #PublicGood: Serge Stinckwich, Muznah Siddiqui & team at UN University – Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability organized a stakeholder consultation on #AI as a #DigitalPublicGood (#AIDPG), funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB) & supported by #ODET & #OICT. A key discussion to (re)focus on trust - between citizens & governments - achievable only through transparent, inclusive & accountable #DPI & #DPG. 🔹 2. OSPO for Good - Government #OSPO Session with Kenya and Trinidad & Tobago: Co-organized by the International Telecommunication Union, UNDP and #ODET, wonderfully MCed by Michael Downey with key insights from Evanson Ikua & Craig Ramlal. The session “From Policy to Practice: Establishing Government OSPOs” gave the floor to countries! We spoke less, listened more so they shape the agenda. The feedback was real, raw, and invaluable for our #OSEE program funded by the European Commission! 🔹 3. DPI Day - Keynote by Deputy Secretary-General Tomas Lamanauskas. Our DSG powerfully highlighted ITU’s several contributions to #OpenSource, including the coordination of the UN-wide #CommonPolicyFramework definition, & the 1st contribution of an #OSAI to the Open Source United code repo: a major milestone for #responsibleAI development. 🔹 4. Open Source United Breakout: Reporting on release of Common Policy & Tools. I had the honor of presenting the #OSU policy, together with co-chairs & contributors who gave details on upcoming tools: UN code repo (with GitLab), software catalogue (with Digital Impact Alliance), & dedicated capacity-building. Truly a historical step forward for open source governance across the UN.
