A new report from the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), part of the National Science Board (NSB)'s congressionally mandated Science and Engineering Indicators series, examines the scale, composition and outlook of the U.S. STEM workforce and education pipeline. The analysis finds that science, technology, engineering and mathematics workers represented about one-quarter of the U.S. workforce in 2023, with employment growth continuing to outpace non-STEM fields and offering strong economic returns. The report highlights trends in workforce composition, expanding STEM degree production, projected occupational growth and the role of R&D-intensive industries, while also identifying challenges in the STEM pipeline — particularly in K–12 mathematics performance and international competitiveness. These findings provide important context for understanding the current and future capacity of the U.S. research enterprise. NSF investments across education, workforce development and research infrastructure continue to support these priorities. https://bit.ly/4rSShnW
