Tomorrow’s the day! We want to introduce you to another of our team members in the Methodist Neuroscience Institute as we get ready to start welcoming patients tomorrow. Dr. Lucas Elijovich is the Medical Director of Neurocritical Care in the Methodist Neuroscience Institute. You may have seen him in the news last week highlighting the work of the Neuroscience Institute ahead of the expansion. Dr. Elijovich leads the Neuro ICU, caring for some of the most complex cases in the Neuroscience Institute, while also training the next generation of neurocritical care providers as the Institute is currently the only academic program for neurocritical care in Tennessee. His patients also include some of our youngest in his role at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital where he is the Director of the Pediatric Vascular Anomalies Clinic. In this role, he leads a team of specialists treat a wide range of conditions, which include hemangiomas and a variety of vascular anomalies. Dr. Elijovich is a member of Semmes Murphey Clinic and is a professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Meet the Team Neurology and neuroscience patients in the Mid-South will move into a new unit on Tuesday with the expansion of the Methodist Neuroscience Institute inside Methodist University Hospital. Over the next few days, we want to introduce you to some of the award-winning providers in our Neuroscience Institute. The Neuroscience Institute includes doctors with some impressive qualifications from around the region, including Dr. Balaji Krishnaiah, our Medical Director of the Methodist Comprehensive Stroke Program, and a professor in Neurology at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Krishnaiah is passionate about stroke care and education, leading the charge in the region to educate high school and college students about neurology and neuroscience, championed clinical research in the field, and is vocal about the risk factors for stroke and other neurological conditions that are prevalent in Memphis, which he calls “the buckle of the Stroke Belt.”
Tuesday, we announced the expansion of our Methodist Neuroscience Institute. The $2.8 million, 47-bed unit consolidates all our neurology and neuroscience patients into one floor. “This is a crucial development for our neurology and neurosurgery patients and their families to be able to stay close to their care teams, and for continuing to develop and train the next generation of neurologists and neurosurgeons in the region through our partnership with The University of Tennessee Health Science Center and the Semmes Murphey Clinic,” said Dr. Lucas Elijovich, Medical Director of Neurocritical Intensive Care. Tennessee Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton has appointed prominent Memphis businessman Billy Orgel to a newly added seat on the University of Memphis Board of Trustees. A graduate of the University of Texas, Orgel has spent the last 40 years transforming the region’s communications landscape through his company Tower Ventures — formerly Majestic Communications — which owns more than 400 cell towers and serves major clients including AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. In addition to his professional work, Orgel brings years of leadership experience, having served on the boards of the National Civil Rights Museum, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare and St. Mary's Episcopal School. He’s currently the chairman of the Tennessee Sports Wagering Council and previously served as chairman of the Shelby County School Board and president of the board of trustees for Temple Israel.
