Kiewit's first electrified marine vessel, the D.B. Bob Wilson, is setting a new benchmark for performance, safety and sustainability on the water. As one of 24 derrick barges in our marine fleet, the D.B. Bob Wilson now runs on smart controls, Tier 4 Final generators, a 672-kWh battery system and an intelligent control platform, designed for versatility, efficiency and a lower carbon footprint. It can operate via shore power, battery-only or a diesel-electric hybrid operating mode. Before its modernization, the vessel was powered by five onboard diesel engines. Our equipment services team will continue modernizing more derrick barges in the fleet, positioning Kiewit as a leader in sustainable marine operations. “In an industry increasingly focused on sustainability, our repowered barges will be among the cleanest and most efficient in North America.”– Kiewit Equipment Technology Director Daenan Fairburn

For more than 40 years, Fuat Sezer was a driving force behind Kiewit Offshore Services in Ingleside, Texas. His leadership helped establish KOS as a leading fabricator for the oil and gas industry, shaping the future of offshore construction in North America. Before his retirement this year, we sat down with Fuat to reflect on the rise of KOS and the story behind our Heavy Lifting Device (HLD), one of the most game-changing assets in our fleet.

Leaders from across Kiewit came together this week at the Beavers’ Women in Heavy Civil (WIHC) networking event in Northern California, uniting with peers to strengthen opportunities for women in heavy civil construction. WIHC’s mission is to build a community, offer career and financial support and create education pathways that support women pursuing careers in the heavy civil industry. We're proud of our Vice President of Commercial Markets and Strategy, Dee Oswald, and Human Resources Director, Rae Harris, who serve on the WIHC leadership team and joined 18 of their colleagues at this year’s event.

Kiewit is helping lead one of Washington's most ecologically significant infrastructure efforts: the Coastal 29 Fish Passage Project. As the progressive design-builder, and in partnership with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), we're replacing 29 outdated and undersized culverts along US 101 and SR 109 that impede fish passage with fish-passable crossings. These improvements help restore salmon and other fish habitat, protect vital ecosystems and cultural resources and uphold WSDOT's commitments to provide resilient infrastructure across some of the region's most rugged and remote terrain. The 29 crossings are grouped into five construction bundles based on geographical location and site conditions. The first three bundles are now complete, totaling 16 fish passable structures. This year, we are working at nine crossing sites with the goal of completing construction on seven of those sites. We are constructing a mix of buried structures consisting of precast box culverts and precast single-span bridges. We are maintaining traffic flow through the project sites by constructing a temporary shoofly MOT bypass around the work area or by utilizing phased construction. This project is part of a larger effort between Kiewit and WSDOT to remove more than 75 fish barriers across the state, consisting of six alternative delivery method projects.

Coming soon to Maryland: Rocky, a 300-foot-long tunnel boring machine that will help protect Ellicott City from severe flooding. As part of the Ellicott City North Tunnel Project, Rocky, named by the citizens of Howard County, will soon excavate a mile-long tunnel beneath Main Street to the Patapsco River, moving up to 26,000 gallons of water per second to preserve the historic community. Shipped in over 40 pieces from Ohio to Maryland, Rocky will be assembled on site and begin tunneling through solid granite, over 100 feet underground, in early 2026. Substantial completion is anticipated by fall 2027.
