🌿 Happy #BiodiversityDay! Nature connects us all - and our actions are part of that shared story 🌍 This #BiodiversityDay, it’s important to recognise that biodiversity loss is a global challenge - and so are the drivers behind it. The Global Environmental Impacts of Consumption (GEIC) indicator, developed by JNCC and SEI – Stockholm Environment Institute, supported by Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Trase - Intelligence for sustainable trade and the GCRF Trade, Development and the Environment Hub (TRADE Hub), highlights how UK consumption contributes to environmental pressures overseas, including impacts on ecosystems and species. By understanding these connections, we can better support more sustainable choices and help protect biodiversity worldwide. 👀 Find out more about the Global environmental impacts of consumption https://lnkd.in/e2emSNEa UN Biodiversity #IDB2026 #TurningScienceIntoAction #ForNaturePeoplePlanet #Consumption #Biodiversity #TogetherForNature
About us
Utilising our high-quality scientific expertise, we provide evidence, advice, coordination and standards to enable the UK Government and devolved administrations to meet their priorities for the natural environment. By helping to achieve a healthy environment we have also contributed to sustainable economic growth and societal well-being. Our success is a testament to the dedication and enthusiasm of our staff, who apply their skills and experience delivering a demanding work programme. We are proud of the partnerships we have forged with other organisations – with the country nature conservation bodies in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with UK and devolved government bodies, and with non-governmental organisations. Many of our activities are concerned with the provision of high-quality, cost-effective and accessible evidence for marine and terrestrial environments across the UK. The evidence we provide on the status of biodiversity and ecosystem services (and the pressures and activities affecting them) is fundamental to good decision making by governments, environmental bodies, developers and regulators. JNCC facilitates joint working to provide solutions and standards that meet the diverse needs of a devolved UK. Collaboration provides opportunities for partners to boost resource efficiency by sharing learning, avoiding duplication and benefiting from economies of scale. JNCC is responsible for advising on nature conservation in the UK’s offshore waters (beyond 12 nautical miles from the shore). As in previous years, the focus of our work in 2015/16 was supporting UK Government and devolved administrations in achieving their obligations for establishing an ecologically coherent network of well-managed marine protected areas. JNCC has a crucial role to play in enabling UK governments to meet their international obligations effectively and efficiently.

📆 Today, 22 May, marks #UKOvershootDay 🚩🇬🇧 If everyone in the world consumed natural resources at the same rate as people in the UK, humanity would have used up a full year’s worth of what Earth can regenerate by today. Many everyday products consumed in the UK, from soy and palm oil and chocolate to coffee and rice, are not produced by the UK itself. While these products are imported and consumed in the UK, many of the environmental pressures associated with their production occur in the countries where they are grown or produced. The Global Environmental Impacts of Consumption (GEIC) indicator helps make these overseas impacts more visible. In 2023, UK consumption was linked to: 29.3k hectares of deforestation globally, equivalent to around the size of 41,000 football pitches, with 99.7% occurring overseas 🌡️ 9.43 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions from deforestation, of which 9.36 million tonnes were linked to overseas production 💧 6.58 billion cubic metres of blue water use globally, of which 6.51 billion cubic metres was associated with production outside the UK Developed by SEI York and JNCC, the Commodity Footprints dashboard uses #GEIC data to offer a user-friendly way to explore environmental impacts and risks linked to consumption and production across global commodity supply chains. It covers more than 160 agricultural commodities across around 240 producer countries and territories, including impacts such as deforestation, deforestation-related emissions, biodiversity pressure and water use. 👉 Explore the dashboard: https://buff.ly/8hvTlbo #UKOvershootDay is a reminder that environmental impacts do not stop at national borders, and that understanding where these impacts occur is an important step towards more sustainable consumption and supply chains. #MoveTheDate #EarthOvershootDay #SustainableConsumption #SupplyChains

🐝 This #WorldBeeDay, we’re highlighting the value of collaboration through the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (PoMS). Bringing together volunteers, landowners, scientists and partner organisations, PoMS helps us understand how pollinator populations are changing across the UK. This matters because pollinating insects – including bees and hoverflies – are essential to both ecosystems and food production. They enable crops and wild plants to reproduce, yet research indicates declines in some key pollinator groups. 🔎 By monitoring these changes, we can build the evidence needed to support effective conservation and help safeguard pollinator diversity and crop security. The UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme is jointly funded and steered by UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) and JNCC, with input from a wider steering group and project partners 🔗 https://ukpoms.org.uk Find out more about the scheme at 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eCiEAcZ5 For details on how to take part 👉 https://lnkd.in/e2hFH8V9 #TogetherForNature #TurningScienceIntoAction #ForNaturePeoplePlanet #Pollinators 📸 Bumblebee and Hoverfly © Natural England/Allan Drewitt 📸 People taking part in a FIT Count © Claire Carvell

🚢 CSM2026 survey comes to an end The 4-week data collection phase of the CSM2026 survey has now been safely and successfully completed, with RV Cefas Endeavour returning into Falmouth following two highly productive survey legs. The volume, quality and range of seabed data collected is a real achievement and a testament to the effective collaboration of all the surveyors, scientists, engineers and crew. 💬 Andrew Colenutt, Head of Hydrography and Meteorology at the MCA and co-lead of the project, said: “The passion and energy for exploration demonstrated by all those involved has been evident throughout this survey. From planning through to completion of survey operations, it’s clear that bringing together expertise from across organisations has enabled a more efficient, comprehensive survey than any one team could achieve alone. This genuine collaboration has optimised every opportunity to collect a wealth of high quality data. Hopefully, this survey will be the first of many more multi-agency collaborations to explore uncharted areas and map the sea around the UK. 💬 Alison Pettafor, Surveyor in Charge at Cefas and co-lead of the project, said: “This survey has been a fantastic example of teams working together at sea – sharing knowledge, building skills, and making new discoveries. Combining mapping, sampling and imagery gives us a much richer understanding of the seabed and the habitats it supports. We are excited to continue working on the baseline data and share our results.” 📊 We'll be sharing more outputs from this survey in the coming months, highlighting the scale and ambition of this joint effort. CSM2026 is a UK cross‑government, four‑week seabed mapping survey bringing together 11 organisations to map the seabed along the UK’s south‑west coastline. Participating organisations include Cefas, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, UK Hydrographic Office, British Geological Survey, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, The Crown Estate, Historic England, JNCC, Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute, Natural England, Royal Navy The survey is coordinated by the UK Centre for Seabed Mapping. #CSM2026 #Collaboration #MarineScience

🌊 What are we seeing on the seabed? Camera tows from the CSM2026 survey are revealing a surprisingly varied seabed beneath the waves. Much of the area is made up of shifting sandy seabed, with patches of gravel and cobbles. Here, we’re seeing mobile species like sea cucumbers, starfish and lobsters moving across the seafloor. In some areas, the seabed changes again. Rocky reefs rise up from the seafloor, supporting a much richer mix of life, from sponges and anemones to soft corals. These reef areas provide food and shelter, attracting a wide range of marine life, including crabs, lobsters and many fish. 🔍 Why this matters Seeing the seabed in this detail helps scientists confirm what maps are showing, better understand different habitats, and build a clearer picture of how species use them.
