Safety doesn’t stop when the sun goes down!🚧🌙 To avoid interfering with daytime traffic, our crews are hard at work through the night. Staying safe after dark calls for additional precautions to ensure the night crews are protected and visible. Remember to always be vigilant and cautious when driving through work zones, especially at night. #SafetyByChoice #TeamGranite #ConstructionSafety

Last Wednesday night I had the chance to head up North to one of our active paving projects on I-5 in Ferndale, where I photographed one of our incredible paving crews in action. While on site, I was able to spend time with the team, hear firsthand how the project is going, and learn more about the processes (and challenges) of working along an active highway. I’m so grateful for the dedication to safety and hard work our crews put into every project, and for the opportunity to capture and share just a glimpse of what they do to keep our roads moving safely and smoothly. An old bridge is like an old friend. You’ve got to stop by for a visit if you’re in the area, and it brings to mind the friends you have in common. And when I say “old bridge,” that could mean a new bridge that was long in the making. I first met this bridge in 2017 from the design renderings (https://lnkd.in/g5rHZAC7). I didn’t get to know it anything like the project-assigned team, of course, but it was the site of some memorable meetings - and who doesn’t enjoy a solid trestle and fascinating falsework? The marks of Granite Construction are all around Washington DC: - Five Metro Stations built in the 1970’s (Including the iconic Stadium Armory station), - Aerial metro stations for DC and Baltimore with curved concrete canopies overhead! (Including at Reagan National Airport and Rhode Island Ave), - The VA side of the beautiful Woodrow Wilson Bridge over the Potomac (one of four drawbridges left on the interstate system - and likely to be the last one as others are replaced with high rise bridges one by one!) - The “Intercounty Connector” MD200 toll road paralleling the north side of the beltway from I270 to MD97 (which I lived for 4.5 years in the making). - And this more recent venture with Archer Western - the South Capitol Street Bridge project, named the “Frederick Douglas Memorial Bridge.” For the memories - Eric Hayes, Ricky Grogan, P.E., Jay Titus, Mike Billing, DBIA, Mike Baker, Sam Fisher, Dan Horvath… it’s a beautiful bridge! The family really enjoyed it - perhaps even a future civil engineer among them.
