👋 Excited to welcome back Shivatmica Murgai, our Machine Learning intern, who’s rejoining the team this summer! Shivatmica is an undergraduate at Stanford University studying Mathematics and Computer Science. She is passionate about the intersection of machine learning and math, particularly in understanding how mathematical frameworks form the backbone of AI models. She has worked on AI safety and cybersecurity research at Stanford’s Artificial Intelligence Lab (Cybench), where she contributed towards a research paper about the application of AI agents with cybersecurity systems. Her past projects include de-biasing word embeddings related to physical appearance and mathematically modeling intelligent transportation systems; she has published her research at several IEEE conferences. She’s also interned at Ello before as a junior research engineer and worked on AI-generating decodable children’s stories and enhancing AI-generated images. At Stanford’s Thrun Lab, she enhanced k-medoids clustering with parallel tempering. In her free time, she enjoys reading, listening to music, and playing badminton. 📚 Favorite Children’s Book: Cuddles the Cow

We're thrilled to welcome Sierra Wang to the team as our Engineering Intern this summer! Sierra brings strong technical skills, a fresh perspective, and an eagerness to learn — and we’re so excited to have her onboard. Sierra is a PhD student in Computer Science at Stanford, advised by Professors John Mitchell and Chris Piech. In her research, Sierra focuses on developing and evaluating technologies to improve access to high-quality education—for example, through Code in Place, a free, global computer science course, and more recently, by designing educational experiences over WhatsApp. Before Stanford, she earned her B.S. in CS at the University of Washington, and M.S. in CS at UC Santa Barbara, where she worked on an operating system for microservices in the IoT. Sierra learned about Ello through her advisor (Chris Piech) and is excited to support efforts that make education more accessible to children. Please join us in giving a big, warm welcome to Don Adero, our new Product Research Lead for New Products at Ello! Don Adero is a product and design research leader passionate about designing for inclusion and elevating people’s everyday lives through thoughtful, human-centered innovation. With over 9 years of experience leading research and strategy across fintech, agriculture, public health, and education, Don brings a rare blend of cultural depth, systems thinking, and grounded execution. At IDEO.org, he helped design transformative programs for adolescent girls and young womens’ health, smallholder farming, and early childhood education across several African countries—embedding empathy and local insight into large-scale interventions. He later transitioned into fintech, where he led product research and strategy for inclusive financial solutions across Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, and Tanzania—ensuring user insights translated into products that were both scalable and trusted. Don is also the founder of 1700 Coffee, a storytelling initiative that documents the lives and labor behind East Africa’s coffee culture—connecting global audiences with the people, places, and histories behind every cup. At Ello, Don leads product research, helping uncover what children desire, not just what they need. His work explores how curiosity, play, and agency can shape joyful, equitable education—especially in underserved communities. He is always curious about what moves people, and how design can help build with—not just for—them. We’re hiring for two really cool roles right now at Ello: 1) Senior Product Engineer and 2) Tech Lead, GenAI & Machine Learning. If you’re passionate about AI, education, and building world-class products that help all kids thrive (not just the lucky few) — let’s talk. 🚀 1) Senior Product Engineer (San Francisco) We’re looking for an ex-founder and full-stack engineer with strong product & design intuition. As Tech Lead, you’ll own the intersection of ML research and product impact, so it requires deep experience in GenAI tooling, production ML, and a strong product mindset. If you care just as much about how things are built as why, we’d love to meet you. ~~ 🌍 At Ello, we’re building the world’s first complete AI teacher for children.
