Duolingo is the world's most popular way to learn a language.

About us

Our mission is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available. Duolingo is the most downloaded education app in the history of the App Store and in 2019 became the top-grossing education app worldwide. We set out to do something altogether different in the learning space. Learning a new language is hard; we believe it should be fun. We use bite-sized lessons that feel like playing a game to keep our learners motivated. Learning a new language can also be expensive, and because we believe it should be free, we made it so. Duolingo has been named to: BuiltIn's Best Places to Work (2023), Fast Company Best Workplaces for Innovators (2022), Fast Company 10 Most Innovative Education Company (2022), among others.

Did you get your job because of your mom?? Well, we wanted to send a public THANK YOU to Melissa Jordan for encouraging her daughter Nora Gordon to apply to Duolingo in 2012. It took Nora eight years to apply but she eventually followed her mom’s advice. Five years later, Nora is still here! 🥹 Nora works on our Learning + Curriculum team, which focuses on making Duolingo effective with learning science and pedagogical expertise. Before Duolingo, she got her TEFL/TESL master's degree, taught English abroad with Peace Corps, and then taught middle school Spanish. 🙋 Who else’s mom deserves a thank you for encouraging them about work?! #duolingo

Here's a spice-y take from Julie Craft: Pumpkin spice lattes are a 𝗆̶𝗂̶𝗇̶𝖽̶𝙜𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙙set…aka, something you are extremely invested in and committed to. But, Starbucks says PSLs are only for a specific season, and it starts the last week of August!! What’s the real truth about PSL season? 👇

The artists on our design team love pushing the boundaries of how we bring Duo to life, and here’s a fun example!! Senior Motion Designer Taylor Peters has been experimenting with new ways to animate Duo, starting with 2D and turning him into a 3D clay figure. Here's how it came together: ✏️ First, Duo was animated in Adobe Animate 🌳 Then he was imported and traced in Blender 🧮 And finally, ported through geometry nodes ☁️ Shoutout to Daniel Martínez Lara for the inspo! What design tools have you been experimenting with?! #design

After four years in Strategy & Business Operations here, Sisi took a bold step: she pivoted into a new chapter as a software engineer. With the support of teammates and mentors across the company, she’s now 30 days into a 5-month iOS rotation and already shipping code! 🚀 We’re so proud to work with seriously smart people like Sisi who approach every challenge with the spirit of curiosity that we build into our products 💚🤯📈. #onlyatduolingo

Strategy, BizOps, and M&A @ Duolingo

Today marks my first 30 days as a software engineer! A year ago, I had a wild thought: “It's been 7 years since I took a computer science class, but I've always wanted to try a career in software engineering. Can I still make this happen?!" 🧐 Thanks in particular to Natalie Glance, Aparajita Singh Turton, Bob Meese, Michael Richards, I'm carving out a 5-month rotation from my Strategy & M&A role to learn iOS development as an engineer on Duolingo's Reengagement team! 🎉 🤩 I feel incredibly grateful to have a chance to reset, learn, and explore a potential career pivot at one of the best companies for developing early eng talent 💥. Month 1 has been humbling with many “holy sh*t” moments… “This code base is like 300 people simultaneously writing a 2000-page novel 🤯” “Wow Swift is a nice language to write in!” followed quickly by “Omg Xcode ☠️☠️☠️” “I’ve never thought about so many edge cases 🤓” “Thank goodness for ChatGPT 😅” “Reached Valley of Despair, slowly crawling out 📈” Right before this rotation, I was working on Duolingo’s acquisition of 🎵 Nextbeat - an exciting highlight to end on with Benjamin Dresser 🚀. Now I’m lucky to be learning from Leon Xu and Stephanie Zhu and contributing to Duolingo's iOS app. (P.S. If you’ve made a similar non-technical -> technical transition, hit me up - I’d love to talk! 🤙🏼) (photo credit to the talented Mig Reyes 😊)
