In 1947, test pilot Chuck Yeager became the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound. Flying high above the California desert, he piloted Bell’s X-1 experimental airplane to 1127 KPH/700 MPH (Mach 1.06). Yeager named the X-1 the “Glamorous Glennis” to honor his wife.
