For context, on March 12th, the U.S. imposed a 25% duty on steel and aluminum imports, which includes "derivative" construction materials such as rebar, duct work, nails, etc. Additionally, the current 14.5% tariff on Canadian lumber (previously raised from 8.05% to 14.54% on August 19th of last year) is set to increase to 39.5% on April 2, 2025. Various economic factors influence the architecture and design sector and are interrelated, including GDP growth, consumer confidence, CapEx, interest rates, tax incentives, and investor ROI. The list goes on. The current uncertain trade policies, particularly tariffs, coupled with the resultant cautiousness in capital expenditures and upsurge in construction expenses, could sway the industry's trajectory. At Arc Scout, we maintain an optimistic outlook. Despite the challenges, indicators of a robust U.S. economy persist: recent inflation decrease, a robust job market, and resilient consumer spending amid sentiment fluctuations.
