Thank you to everyone who came out to Cornell Tech yesterday for our collaborative gathering on platform responsibility regarding non-consensual intimate imagery & the TAKE IT DOWN Act. Video arriving soon of the illuminating panel conversation with Malika Saada Saar, Dr. Rebecca Portnoff (Thorn), Miranda Wei, and moderator Alexios Mantzarlis. It was quite powerful. This collaboration between All Tech Is Human and Cornell Tech was developed through Alexios, Director of the Security, Trust, and Safety Initiative and co-founder of Indicator. Indicator has been doing some impressive investigative journalism related to this issue. Yesterday's gathering also featured the triumphant return of All Tech Is Human's Sandra Khalil, who gave opening remarks alongside ATIH's David Ryan Polgar. (Photo by Leah Ferentinos.) All Tech Is Human has numerous projects and gatherings related to NCII, child safety, and Safety by Design in the coming months. Reach out to learn more and get involved. #AllTechIsHuman #ResponsibleTech #ResponsibleTech

Thank you to everyone who came to Cornell Tech last night to hear from the terrific Malika Saada Saar, Miranda Wei, and Dr. Rebecca Portnoff — an event held in partnership with All Tech Is Human. We discussed whether the Take It Down Act, whose legal obligations on platforms kicked in on Tuesday, will actually make a dent on synthetic nonconsensual intimate imagery. There is some value in the law, but also a lot more work to be done to hold platforms accountable, prevent this form of gender-based violence, and bring justice to victims. It can be frustrating to keep writing about this wave of abuse enabled by the reckless deployment of AI. It becomes a little less so when you realize there's a community of advocates, researchers, and technologists working to raise the price of inaction and design a better tomorrow.

"One of the red flags is when anyone says that this future, whatever it is, is inevitable. That is a red flag, because it's making you feel scared, it's making you not ask questions, it's a kind of conversation stopper." -Carissa Véliz If you missed our livestream with Carissa Véliz, author of Prophecy: Prediction, Power, and the Fight for the Future, from Ancient Oracles to AI, you can watch below. Carissa traces humanity's historic obsession with predictability—drawing a line from the Oracle of Delphi to modern artificial intelligence—to expose how predictions are frequently weaponized as power plays rather than pure quests for knowledge. She highlights how tech executives use doom-laden or inevitable future-casting to instill fear, create self-fulfilling prophecies, and strip citizens of their own agency. She argues that by reframing complex AI architectures into their simpler political roles, individuals can see past the marketing of corporate interests and feel empowered to reclaim a self-determined future. How do we protect kids online without building a pervasive ecosystem of digital surveillance? Read our new piece by Emma Hatheway that tackles this question by diving into the shift from platform-specific age gates to device-level age verification. As states and global regulators rapidly mandate age verification, the tech ecosystem faces a critical turning point: balancing child safety with fundamental digital rights. Let us know your thoughts on it! #ResponsibleTech #ResponsibleAI #ChildSafety #TrustAndSafety #AllTechIsHuman https://lnkd.in/eqSWsXNX

As you may have seen in a few recent viral videos, booing at the mention of AI during graduation speeches is having a moment. The most famous occurred at the University of Central Florida two weeks ago, with students booing when the speaker mentioned that AI is “the next Industrial Revolution.” When the speaker mentioned that AI was not part of daily life just a few short years ago, the students enthusiastically clapped. The speaker was clearly taken aback by the reaction. I wasn’t shocked, and I imagine many of you reading this were not shocked as well. But it certainly caused me to reflect on how one’s age and upbringing dramatically color where we fall on the spectrum of hope towards building a better tech future. My past was filled with moments of awe, excitement, and hunger as I thought about how tech would change our lives. I have memories of social media and emerging technology enriching my life. So while that is certainly not the present situation, my memories deeply influence my belief in what is possible. But to a recent graduate, their past was after social media started going sideways. It’s much harder to believe that a better tech future is possible when there isn’t a memory in your past where the tech in your life felt positive. I think that’s why intergenerational collaboration can be so important; to be siloed in youth robs one of history and potential, and to be isolated from youth prevents one from experiencing the true gravity and vulnerability that others feel. That intergenerational mismatch was in full effect during the graduation boos, along with the clapping when describing an AI-free past. We can’t go back in time, however. Nor should we. But I certainly want a tech future worth clapping for. #AllTechIsHuman #ResponsibleTech All Tech Is Human

Are you building your career in Responsible AI, Trust & Safety, or Public Interest Technology? Here are 9 observations from our ongoing survey for candidates, employers, and hiring managers. Which one (or more) resonates with you?? 📌The ATIH talent community skews heavily toward career transitioners, not first‑time entrants 📌Demand is strongest in Trust & Safety, AI Safety, Policy/Governance across non‑technical and hybrid roles 📌“Finding relevant roles” and “standing out” are bigger pain points than compensation 📌Personalized job matching is the single most requested service, and talent is open to AI helping 📌There is global demand for Responsible Tech Roles, but non‑US talent feels underserved 📌Access to humans matters more than more content 📌Talent wants transparency about “ghost jobs” and broken hiring systems 📌Skills & certification pathways are desired, but only if tied to jobs 📌There is a deep bench of talent willing to be featured, and many want visibility There is often a mismatch in expectations from those looking for roles in Responsible AI, Trust & Safety, and Public Interest Technology, and those on the hiring side. That is why we are surfacing observations that can benefit the entire ecosystem, along with enhancing our career-related activities and talent matching through our partnership with Highspring. We'll be doing a deep dive on everything we are learning for a livestream on Responsible Tech Trends on Thurs, May 28th, with Melanie Quandt from Highspring and Sherine Kazim from ATIH. A big thank you to Siegel Family Endowment for supporting our whole-of-ecosystem work, along with our aligned inquiry-based approach to understanding what the community needs. These observations derive from 200 survey responses, along with analyzing trends from our Responsible Tech Job Board and talent pool. #ResponsibleTech #AllTechIsHuman https://lnkd.in/e9y_ETqm
