What are the pros and cons of using relational vs. non-relational data storage models?

I totally agree with the high level description of the relation model. In practice, there are defined objects whose models are easy to envision like a Product, Offer, Market etc. There are requirements around the relationship between offer to product and offer to market which could be easily defined and enforced in a Relational Model. Querying of the data becomes easy and mapping the data to a programming model is much more simpler due to various open source and commercial tools that are available for the developer. To me Relation Model is a 2 dimensional graph where rows and columns form the axes and it's easy to interpret.

Relational models use tables with rows & columns to structure data, enforcing consistency & normalization. They're great for complex queries & ACID compliance, but can be rigid. Think of 'em like a well-organized filing cabinet - everything's in its place, but moving stuff around can be a pain. TOGAF practitioners often leverage these for enterprise data modeling.

In my experience non relational databases provide the mega scalability required for streaming and messaging where the transaction management is not with the data-source but with the applications. It's good especially for non financial applications and we use these models in capturing the network events where millions of devices are connected to our network and hundreds of different devices are connected and new devices get introduced and rather unseen attributes pop up. We want to safely capture the unknown attributes which is not easy in relational model. There is a lot of progress in frameworks like Apache Drill to encapsulate for the developers and most of the AI/ML can evolve the model on learning about the unseen attributes.

Non-relational models are like your junk drawer - flexible & adaptable. They use collections & documents, handling unstructured data like a champ.
