What are the best ways to foster collaboration between Senior Stakeholders with conflicting goals?

When dealing with senior stakeholders with conflicting goals, it's crucial to understand the root of their objectives. In a previous role, we had two senior leaders with seemingly opposing targets. By conducting individual goal-setting sessions and facilitating open discussions, we uncovered underlying synergies in their long-term visions. This led to a more aligned approach, fostering collaboration rather than competition.

Conflicts between two Senior stakeholders is not desirable. The foremost thing will be to understand the reason for the conflict and their respective ways or processes to achieve the goals. Analyse pros and cons of all the respective ways or processes along with involved stakeholders. Take the most potential ways to achieve the goal optimally with required moderation of those ways during collaborative discussions with the consent of all involved stakeholders. Let stake holders feel it is collaborative efforts only to achieve the goal, it will not hurt the ego of anyone. Encourage innovativeness and ensure continuous dialogue happens. A conducive environment must be created within organisations so that learning is possible from the past.

Collaboration is an ongoing process, and it requires commitment from all stakeholders involved. one can adjust strategies based on the evolving dynamics and always be open to refining his/her approach. there are few points which can help 1-Open Communication Channels-Always have an open and transparent communication environment where stakeholders feel comfortable expressing their concerns and goals. 2-Define Common Objectives-Identify overarching organizational goals that all stakeholders can agree on. This helps to align everyone towards a common purpose. 3-Establish Clear Priorities-Work together to prioritize goals and identify which objectives are most critical for the organization's success. 4-Collaborative Problem-Solving.

In addressing conflicts among senior stakeholders organizations must cultivate a conducive environment that promotes learning from past experiences, enabling continuous improvement and development within the organizational framework. in my one of last company our leader called for a WAR room(brainwash session) for entire day where every leader was provided stage/opportunity to speak openly. initially it was heated up arguments and conversation but in a short while all leaders understood that everyone has one goal ie to support companies goal and objectives with different priorities and process. finally all came up with shared OKR to achieve common objectives

As part of this step, I would map out their shared objectives and approaches and look for common interests or themes. I would then find alignment to the broader goals of the organization and how they can all play a part.

By organizing team-building activities and collaborative workshops, we created an environment where personal connections flourished. This laid the foundation for trust, allowing the stakeholders to look beyond their conflicting goals and find common ground for collaboration.

I have always found that building trust through vulnerability and honesty is what unifies a leadership group. Vulnerability eliminates silos and selfish ambitions and focuses the team on helping each other succeed.

Different views and conflicting goals sets a great precedence to bring honest, transparent, agenda lobby discussions towards common ground. It’s an event that must be encouraged with you as the chair, ensuring fair voice, respect and trust is the decorum. In the end your job is to highlight and document the different opinions and goals and set a path to an ideal objective that they can expertly navigate towards. These events are gifts and beats having to deal with aftermath of decisions that they didn’t agree to, but didn’t articulate or support.

You can do this by seeking their input, feedback, approval on key issues, milestones, and deliverables by using collaborative tools such as; brainstorming, voting, or consensus-building, and empowering them to make decisions within their scope and authority Involving them will help you to gain their buy-in, support, and ownership of the project or initiative

In a scenario where two leaders had differing approaches, we identified their unique strengths and assigned responsibilities accordingly. Recognizing peoples strengths and showcasing it not only gives them a sense of ownership and responsibility, it also highlights the value they bring to a project or endeavor. When we are able to perceive and appreciate other stakeholders from the perspective of the value they bring, it becomes easier to understand their viewpoint and the value in their objections or criticism.

Foster a culture of collaboration is the key of success through using failures as opportunities to learn, improve, and innovate, by conducting post-mortems, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective actions Always learning from failures will help you to strengthen your relationship, motivate your stakeholders and there's methods so useful for you to appreciate them like as : acknowledging and rewarding their efforts, achievements, and impacts, sharing positive feedback and testimonials, and celebrating milestones and accomplishments

Celebrating successes, no matter how small, is crucial in fostering collaboration. After overcoming a major hurdle in a project where senior stakeholders initially had conflicting goals, we organized a joint celebration. Acknowledging and appreciating the efforts of each stakeholder group created a positive atmosphere, making it easier to navigate future challenges collaboratively.

Facilitate sessions where everyone can share their viewpoints and what they consider to be successes and failures. Then help them celebrate together and learn from one another. Understanding each other's viewpoints and mindset is crucial to fostering empathy with each other that can help reduce conflicts.

Consider implementing a conflict resolution mechanism and a continuous feedback loop. In my experience, establishing a neutral third-party mediator for high-stakes discussions proved effective in diffusing tension and finding compromise. You need to view this is a game of chess and base your next steps on an assessment of power / influence, then combine it with game theory and apply negotiation strategy.

Let's keep in mind that it's also about acknowledging the less tangible factors that influence decision-making (such as individual experiences and corporate culture) while maintaining a focus on the broader business objectives. Recognizing these elements is crucial for a balanced approach that respects individual perspectives but keeps the collective vision and goals in clear sight.
