K Street's partisan split persists in Q1

Posted by Noah Kunkel on May 11, 2026

Republican-leaning firms have long dominated K Street, and the first quarter of 2026 was no exception.

Revenue totals from this quarter showed a massive divide between the two sides of the federal lobbying market. In fact, the gap was so wide that the combined revenue of the top 10 Democratic-leaning firms, totaling $15.13 million, fell short of what each of the top two Republican-leaning firms earned individually: $26.77 million for Ballard Partners LLC and $15.26 million for Miller Strategies LLC. Even a relatively strong quarter for McAllister & Quinn LLC, the highest-earning Democratic-leaning firm, underscored the scale of the gap. While the firm posted its highest single-quarter revenue on record at $2.34 million, that total still trailed each of the top 14 Republican-leaning lobbying firms.

The Republican edge extended beyond a few standout firms. Republican-leaning firms not only outnumbered their Democratic counterparts overall, but also occupied a larger share of the industry's upper revenue tiers. A total of 535 Republican-leaning firms filed in the first quarter of 2026, roughly 40% more than the 381 Democratic-leaning firms that filed. Of those, there were over twice as many Republican-leaning firms that were classified as large or very large, generating revenue higher than $250,000 or $1 million, respectively.

This pattern persists even among emerging firms. Of the top 10 highest-earning firms that filed for the first time within the past year, five were categorized as having a slight to strong Republican lean. In contrast, only one firm, The Wayfinder Group, was identified as Democratic-leaning. The early success of these Republican-leaning newcomers points to a continuing GOP-aligned advantage on K Street.

LegiStorm determines a lobbying firm's partisan affiliation using its Revolving Door dataset. Firms are assigned a degree of partisanship based on the political backgrounds of their lobbyists, specifically whether those lobbyists previously held elected, appointed or staff positions connected to Democratic or Republican politicians or operations.
