Officials on Friday released the cause of a fire that tore through vegetation in Stanislaus County.The Sierra Fire, which sparked near Woodward Lake Drive and 28 Mile Road in the Oakdale area, started because of a handheld saw cutting through pipe next to dry grass, according to the Modesto Fire Department. The fire began at a structure and spread to nearby vegetation. Cal Fire's Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit said the fire burned through almost 50 acres before crews extinguished the flames. At 3:45 p.m. Thursday, it had burned 30 acres with a moderate rate of spread, Cal Fire said. An Alert California camera showed a plume of white smoke. No major smoke plume was visible on the camera at 4:36 p.m. This story is developing.
