Latest Details on Dream Library

Get the first confirmed Genesis titles that you'll be playing on your DC. Phantasy Star, anyone?

Japan's Dreamcast Magazine is home to new details along with the first confirmed Genesis games for the upcoming Dream Library download offer by Sega. The Dream Library, you'll recall, is a Sega of Japan service that promises to allow gamers to download around 300 classic Genesis and Turbo Grafx games for limited play time on their Dreamcast.

Currently, there are four games mentioned as being part of the program: Phantasy Star, Gain Ground, Puyo Puyo, and Flicky. We're not sure which version of Phantasy Star is referred to in the magazine, but given that Phantasy Star Online is set for release later this year, we wouldn't be surprised if Sega made parts 2, 3, and 4 available.

Of course, Phantasy Star is a complicated series, and in Japan, each incarnation came packaged with a map, along with a thick instruction manual. How will manuals be handled on the new download system? Currently, it seems like nothing is planned, although it's possible that in the future we'll be able to make use of the Dreamcast Zip Drive in order to print out the instructions to our games.

We've also heard rumblings that the DreamLibrary may incorporate other forms of software, including games made for Sega's color portable Game Gear, and the Sega Mark III arcade board. It looks, unfortunately, that 32X and Sega CD games won't end up being part of the program, but who knows what the future holds.

The Dream Library program is set to launch with the newest version of the Dream Passport software on April 29. Sega has yet to comment on a US version of the program.
