Emmys: Marion Dougherty Gets Governor’s Award, Juried Winners Announced

The late Marion Dougherty, a legendary casting director who is credited with being among the first to cast Dustin Hoffman, William Shatner, Glen Close and many others, will be posthumously awarded the 2014 Governor’s Award by the Television Academy during the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

On Thursday, the Television Academy also announced juried award winners for the 66th Annual Emmy Awards, including Saturday Night Live for costumes, The Simpsons for animation, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and the Disney Channel.

Awards in juried categories are given after entries are screened by a panel of professionals from the same industry group. There are no nominees, but after an open discussion by the peer group judges, there is a vote on whether an entry is worth of an Emmy. Only those with unanimous approval win.

Dougherty, who died Dec. 4, 2011 at age 88, first started in TV in the early 1960s with seminal shows including Naked City and Route 66. She also cast dozens of movies including Batman (1989), Full Metal Jacket and Lethal Weapon.

The Television Academy, in announcing her award, cited her as “a pioneer in the casting industry whose career was built in television. She is being recognized with the Governors Award for defining the role of the casting director, changing the profession for both television and film.”

Dougherty broke the mold of traditional casting. Instead of bringing in a large number of actors for a role, she would select three or four very different actors to provide the director with options and “performs who could bring unique shadings to the role,”

Dougherty was also spotlighted in the documentary Casting By, released in 2012, which was itself nominated for an Emmy.

Below is a list of the juried award winners who will receive Emmys at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday, Aug. 1 6.

An edited version of the Emmys for crafts and special categories that takes place a week before the Primetime Emmy Awards are presented will be broadcast on Aug. 24 on FXM, a cable channel. The actual awards will also be streamed as part  of the Backstage LIVE show on Emmys.com on Aug 25 just before the Primetime Emmy preshow.
