Very JRPG-esque JRPG

4.5 stars if I could... SaGa Frontier can be best described as a very condensed JRPG. The remastered version has 8 campaigns, each with its own "flavour": some are very story heavy, others just tell you to do whatever you want. Where Frontier stands out from the rest of the franchise is its accessibility: it's the least gimmicky of the franchise and it plays more like a straight JRPG. If your main joy in a JRPG is to complete the story, level up your characters, find gear and spells, and explore all the dungeons and content, even the ones that aren't part of the story, than Frontier has all of that in spades, and you get to do it 8 different times (there is a special bonus if you complete all of the original campaigns). The game's main drawbacks: none of the stories are very good and they can feel a little redundant when you're grinding the same spells and gear through 8 different campaigns to complete your roster (tip: focus on leveling your main team; leave extra characters to your backup team. Don't try to fully level a full 3 team). If you're expecting 8 FF7 level stories, then you need to look elsewhere. The stories of the campaigns are mainly just a reason to explore the world and gear up. You might also need a map guide for a lot of the game. The dungeons are pretty complex and have tons of nooks and crannies that are easily missable. Thankfully, the new features in the remaster help a lot with this. In other words, if you just want a content packed JRPG filled with stuff to do that is just RPG stuff, and not lots of minor MMO style chore quests and mini games, the least amount of SaGa weirdness-this is the most straightforward game in the franchise-and don't mind some shallow storytelling, this game will deliver.

mySaGa: for tough kids

it's like the mysims of the saga franchise. and i mean that in a good way. it is simpler, easyer to understand, has clear instructions as to where you're supposed to go and what your supposed to do. the trade off is it is more liniar, each character has their own story, their own bosses, and their own goals, characters are also more devided in what they can do: here you have mystics, humans, and mechs, mechs don't work like the other two, they don't level up, but they are more moidular in that they can equip more of anything. also less weapon viriaty i think: you got swords, katanas. guns, and heavy guns. i have played through the robot, and am half way through a henshin hero with a spiky hairdoo. i'd say it would be a good game to get you into saga games, but it's more like somthing to get your kid into it. this version has short stories[by game standards] and a character that lets you play a super version of the final bosses in even shorter story sections. if that sounds good to you, play it. but if this sounds like a weanie game(in comparasin, it is.) thats okay, there are other saga games to play(3 is pretty good.)

don't touch the classics please...

this one is another perfect example of how remastering games can have unintended consequences... the game is there and is as good as you might remember it but the remaster kills some of the magic... heavily filtered graphics and some changes to the translation that feels different from what i remember mostly. a positive thing is that the game is working on linux without problems other than a crash at first launch, but to problems ever since.
