THQ Secures Tetris Rights

THQ will be publishing the next-generation Tetris games.

THQ has secured the rights to publish Tetris games for next-generation consoles, ensuring the continuation of the classic puzzle series on such platforms as the Sony PlayStation 2, the Microsoft Xbox, and the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. The agreement between Blue Planet Software, Tetris Company, and THQ extends to the year 2004. THQ will release Tetris-based games on several next-generation platforms by the 2001 holiday season.

“Tetris represents one of the greatest gaming phenomenon in our industry,” stated Jeff Lapin, vice chairman and COO for THQ. “From ten minute break-time games on desktops in countless office cubicles to head-to-head PlayStation competitions in living rooms across the globe, Tetris has defined puzzle gaming for over a decade on every game system. We are delighted to be partnering with Blue Planet Software as we prepare Tetris for the next wave of handheld and set-top technology, as well as the expanding online environment.”
