Mutant Raiders: Hunter Mutants

Hunter mutants, AKA "the scary ones", possess a reputation as some of the deadliest manifestations the mutation can erupt in a human body.

Their animalistic traits usually gravitate towards species renowned for being uniquely effective survivors and/or killers, namely solitary apex predators such as felines, marsupials, or reptiles as their most common forms, though there are rare cases of Hunter mutants resembling far less conventional animals, biologically modified for carnivorous lifestyles, such as rabbits, deer, or even hedgehogs.

And though the moniker of "The scary ones" may seem somewhat juvenile, it is not unfounded. For Hunters are an especially dangerous strain of the Primal Mutation, and are often a very distressing sight within zones of mutant hordes. They occupy something of an assassination or commando role within the typical raider ranks, on occasion serving or seen with backup and additional muscle, but are more typically encountered by their lonesome, seemingly preferring self-reliance and seclusion as opposed to the pack-tactics of most other strains. This is far from a hinderance however, as Hunter mutants display numerous additional mutations to the human body that set them considerably higher up than their more plentiful counterparts.
Firstly, on a physical level, Hunters are immediately notable, not just for their larger size than that of an average warrior, but in the makeup of these exact bodies. Autopsies of slain Hunters confirm that the tendons and musculature stationed within the joints of a hunter's body are twice as dense and thick than any other mutant, besides those of the Brute strain. These muscles in question can flex and contract with a force and pressure to match that of a cannon shot, allowing Hunters to leap and run with monumental range, regardless of the sheer weight of their bodies. Couple this with the idea of what this kind of pressure can do to human bones, and already Hunters would seem to be rather intimidating.
However, there is another detail as well: Their claws. Almost all mutants, regardless of strain, species, or circumstance, sprout razor sharp claws on the tips of their fingers and toes, and have their teeth lengthen and warp into carnivorous fangs, much like the paws and/or talons of predatory animals. Many mutants still possess the cognitive ability to use human weaponry, outside of firearms, but more often than not, such humanity is further abandoned in favour of using this natural weapons instead, especially if a mutant is emotionally breaking down. Hunters however, are special case, as their claws are noticeably larger, thicker, and much, much sharper than the ones seen on other strains. That is because they are not just of keratin make, but instead are a dense mixture of calcium, keratin, and the iron within human blood, a mixture that is constantly regenerated so that the edges never dull. This causes a Hunter's claws to do considerable damage to any material they interact with, putting them up to par with military-grade blades, at the cost of a Hunter requiring a very blood-rich diet to upkeep the loss of their nutrients. This of course only makes Hunters even more aggressive, as they almost always instantly go for the kill without a second of fear or caution.
Unfortunately, that aggression does not mean their minds weren't well preserved by their mutations, or rather, not the traditional sense.

The standard human brain is capable of consuming, processing, and digesting information within but a second of allotted time, give or take the many variables of the common peasantry. Hunter brains however, much like with Scavenger mutants, have had their brains devolved and metamorphized by the rampant, savage instincts of their mutations, with most of their intellect and personality is shed to make further room for this information processing, allowing them to react and respond to stimulus within a fraction of a normal human's ability, making their reflexes absurdly heightened, to unpredictable levels.
However, unlike much of their peers, Hunters often have a better track record of retaining the memories of life in society, not if them individually, but society as a whole. Where Scavengers can near instantly ascertain the value of any given object they find, Hunters possess the same capability, but for living beings. Many sources within our scholarly circles confirm that it's incredibly rare for a Hunter mutant to target a defenceless bystander, instead they often laser focus on those of logistical or militaristic value, the higher importance, the bigger drive to kill. Hunters, even if their older selves knew nothing of how a settlement may defend itself, are dangerously skilled in "cutting off the head of the snake" as it were, deftly analysing the strengths, capabilities, and weaknesses of any opponent they come across, solo or plural, without their target even knowing of such themselves. This weaponized empathy is a large trait amongst all mutant specimens, though it's often debated how much of a horde's strategy for taking out key vulnerabilities is by individual intuition, or just the orders of a Chieftain. Many fellow scholars even shun the idea of Hunters being intelligent at all, instead believing them to be something like biological, Stalker-class automatons, excessively good at navigation, tracking, and combat, but only knowing as much as their superiors tell them. There is no way to confirm either side, as any attempt to study a Hunter in close proximity, is usually a death wish.
Thus, general consensus upon this strain's ability to study our capabilities is: "Somehow they can do it, just kill them before they do anything about it."

And to actually dispatch a Hunter, the main tactic is to first consider one's own survival. Unless experienced, skilled, and/or assisted with technological augmentation, it is highly, severely recommended to never approach a Hunter directly, especially solo. Their bodies are perfectly built for one-on-one encounters, and thus in most cases will be expertly adept at utterly mutilating single targets. The best method is to place as many disadvantages onto the beasts as possible, such as catching it unaware, targeting limbs and/or vitals, or even the tried and true method: Owning a firearm.
All mutants possess excessively heightened senses, to the point where even the most minor of sound, scent, or tremor within close proximity, would instantly compromise one's position to a mutant. However, this is both an advantage and disadvantage to the creatures, as the sensitivity is set so high, that sudden overstimulation such as a bright flash of light, corrosive gas vapours, or even a simple gunshot, would instantly stun and even damage a mutant within that exact same proximity, severely crippling eyesight, smell and hearing respectively. Though a mutant is capable of healing such wounds, no matter the severity, the sheer pain of the sensation and their need to focus during regeneration (See also: Topic 7: "They're fucking animals what the fuck is happening" Penned by: Dr Huxley Demeter, for further details.) would leave them wide open for retaliation. This is brought up here, because Hunter mutants are particularly vulnerable to this drastic weakness, due to their senses being heightened even further. Therefore, the agonized state the exploitation puts them within will likely last far longer, and be far more effective, than that of the average Warrior or Scavenger. Be forewarned however, pain such as that would undoubtedly enrage the creatures, and thus must be dispatched quickly after being crippled.

It is very much assumed that what we academics have no need to describe what might occur, should one be foolish enough to make these monstrosities angry.

Or, well, angrier.
