A morphological and molecular characterization of the spinal cord after ventral root avulsion or distal peripheral nerve axotomy injuries in adult rats.

Malondialdehyde and advanced oxidation protein products measured at the end of day 30 after surgery increased significantly (P<0.05) in sciatic nerve, spinal cord, DRG, dorsal root and ventral root when compared to control rats indicating an increase in lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation.

The stimulus (10 pulses at 100 Hz) was applied through a fourth pipette to a more proximal ventral root. The neuronal response can be seen as a wave of activity propagating from the most proximal electrode to the most distal, with the number and frequency of spikes decreasing as it travels.

The spinal nerves are formed by the dorsal and ventral roots, and these roots exit the dura through separate fenestrations [1].

All vertebrates send somatic motor elements from the central nervous system (CNS) through ventral roots and receive sensory elements through dorsal roots.
