It allows for the mixed use of devices, such as the use of digital
tachographs for heavyweight cargo vehicles, and the use of smart devices (smartphones or tablets) for smaller vehicles or subcontracted vehicles, for which it is difficult to install digital
tachographs.
The decision comes after 10 of the Otterburn-based firm's drivers admitted creating false
tachograph records and a company boss admitted perverting the course of justice.
Following an investigation by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency - which had previously looked into issues over record keeping at the firm in 2006 - it was found there were a number of discrepancies, with some staff seemingly failing to record journeys, turning their
tachographs off before clocking on or off, working on rest days but filing false paperwork, working longer than legally allowed, or not taking enough time off between shifts.
One HGV was also found without a
tachograph to measure driver hours, and another was fined PS350 for tampering with his using a magnet.
Tampering with
tachographs to avoid complying with legislation on driving and rest time has serious repercussions on road safety - an increase of 2.8 billion per year in the societal cost of accidents, according to the Commission's impact study.
This partnership, financial details of which were not available, will offer the ability to download data remotely from a
tachograph which will be included in TomTom Business Solutions' WEBFLEET offerings, using the standard in vehicle on-board unit TomTom LINK 510.
The Transport Council adopted a partial general approach on revision of the
tachograph legislation in December 2011, setting aside at the time the question of this merger.

THE EUROPEAN Commission has formally told Greece and Cyprus they must ensure new lorries using their roads are fitted with digital
tachographs. This became compulsory under European Union (EU) law for new goods vehicles in the EU from May, but Brussels claims Greece and Cyprus have not issued the necessary
tachograph cards to drivers, companies, workshops and control officers.
It is now illegal to register new trucks, coaches and some business unless they are equipped with new digital
tachographs.
In 1978, the United Kingdom was one of the last members of the European Union to adopt a requirement mandating
tachographs in trucks.
