To cultural
pluralists, having one set of cultural principles amounts to imperialism toward minority groups.
However, the book's adamant defense of apophatic pluralism does not exhaust the many questions posed to
pluralists. Apophatic pluralism is not a self-evident philosophical second order argumentation.
While the theme is religious pluralism, Hallett is less concerned with engaging other religions than with engaging religious
pluralists themselves, namely, John Hick.
For evidence against monism, argue
pluralists, one need only look at the current state of scientific inquiry which is constituted by a 'plurality of representational or classificatory schemes, of explanatory strategies, of models and theories, and of investigative questions and the strategies appropriate for investigating them' (ix).
