A verbal audio alert signaling the proximity of another aircraft was presented either monaurally without spatial cues or binaurally with HRTF filtering simulating a sound source at 0 [degrees] elevation and three times the azimuth of the target.
Audiological exclusions (subjects and controls) comprised previous ear disease causing hearing loss; hearing loss since childhood; subjects with average pure tone hearing threshold (APTT) of more than 50 dB (because it is not technically possible to deliver a competing DCST message at 50 dB above that level); inability to repeat test sentences presented monaurally or to complete protocol.
