But despite these advancements, the market has taken clear steps over the past couple of years away from tape and toward
disk for backup and recovery.
Depending on the auditor's application, optical
disk storage may offer certain advantages over microfilm or microfiche.
These blue and red shifts broaden the spectrum of X rays emitted from the iron atoms in the accretion
disk. The greater the speed of the
disk, the more spread out the spectrum becomes.
In either approach, the backup data on
disk at the central location can be sent to tape if desired.
Astronomers observed a large gap between the outer and inner regions of the
disk surrounding star HD 142527.
One more thing about pumping the
disks: diodes* are used instead of lamps.
- A floating damper mechanism effectively dampens shock and vibration by wrapping the
disk with cushioning gels made of impact absorbing material.
"ADIC is advancing
disk backup into an important new phase by combining the characteristics of
disk and tape in an integrated system," says Dianne McAdam, Senior Analyst and Partner at Data Mobility Group.
A drive with removable, high-capacity, magnetic
disk media potentially meets these criteria.
All this is possible because the RAID hard
disk controller reconstructs the missing information from the information that resides on the remaining redundant healthy
disks.
Because some are random-access storage mediums, using the same technology as your hard
disk, applications stored on them can be run directly on your computer--with no need to first download them onto your hard
disk, as would be necessary with tape storage.
The Thinkpad is adequate for making simple presentations, but not for the multimedia programs with high-resolution graphics (that now take up more than 100 megabytes of
disk space) that I produce for the ACPE and The Informatics Institute.
Since one optical
disk can store up to 20,000 documents, the company has saved the cost of the complete system in floor-space savings alone.
You have to be conscientious to record what is on each
disk."
Scientists first imaged a single debris
disk around Beta Pictoris in 1985.
