Although the development of functional analysis technology (Iwata et al., 1982/1994) has been paramount in advancing the widespread development of individualized, function-based treatments, the variables typically explored in functional analysis of severe problem
behaviors may not always be sufficient in determining the maintaining variables for problem
behavior.
While much is known about why a problem
behavior occurs at an unacceptable rate, little to date has been done with developing a methodology to discern why the rate (or lack thereof) of the alternate
behavior is relatively low.

"Functional assessment has been found to be the one factor that predicts successful behavioral treatment of maladaptive
behaviors," regardless of functional level, age, or type of
behavior, Theodosia Paclawskyj, Ph.D., said at a meeting on developmental disabilities sponsored by Johns Hopkins University.
Participants (N = 15) included ten graduate psychology students in an Applied
Behavior Analysis course at a medium-sized, comprehensive New York State college, and five on- and off-site Bachelor-level
behavior specialists from a local, nonprofit agency.
