The Rural Connected Communities competition is the latest wave of PS200m funding to pioneer 5G testbeds across the country and deliver the benefits of the highest speeds of mobile connectivity that are available.

The IIC Negotiation Automation Platform Testbed leverages a variety of AI infrastructure technologies, which automatically negotiate trading conditions and resource assignment with each other in order to coordinate interests among various AI systems.

Engineering consultancy WSP, which recently completed a major relocation of 700 staff to a new headquarters in Birmingham, is now overseeing the preliminary and detailed design of the TfWM elements of the Midlands Future Mobility CAV Testbed.

This maximizes operator feedback, maximizes opportunities for tools to incorporate operator feedback and evolve in newly discovered directions, and maximizes early discovery of potential technical incompatibilities or misunderstandings between testbed and tool providers.

The testbed leverages Keysight's metrology-grade signal source and signal analyzers, as well as Keysight's industry-proven software tools -- Signal Studio (a signal creation tool) and 89600 VSA (a demodulation and vector signal analysis tool) -- to confidently validate that their new 5G mmWave RFFE solutions comply to the latest 3GPP Release 15 standards.

The testbed will be aiming to show businesses how 5G could make them more productive, ease congestion and cut costs, as well as potentially being used in the operation of autonomous vehicles, and in the NHS.

"Following the demand from our FTSE 100 trials, we are extending our testbed opportunities so that businesses of all sizes can work with us to build the 5G economy," Mr Evans said.

The new funds will go toward expanding the 50 miles of roads across the West Midlands already announced as part of the government's Connected and Autonomous Vehicles testbed.

Bahrain will also serve as a testbed for further expansion into the Middle East.
