Pointing out that establishing road safety is a collective responsibility, he said that it is time to start behaving as a civil society: "a society with shared responsibility which really stands up for vulnerable road users and which takes full responsibility for fighting the number of traffic deaths and injuries," said Goos.

'Road deaths like an epidemic'

Ansari told the court he had no memory of killing Goos. "It's not there," he said, referring to any memory of the fatal event.

On the day of his arrest, police showed Ansari surveillance footage from the country club, which showed him getting out of Goos's Jeep Cherokee and chasing the victim.

But Ansari admitted that after spending a night in custody, some memories of the events leading up to Goos's death did return.
