Fen project manager, said: "We are trying to create a more sustainable system for farmers through developing crops that grow in wetlands systems, crops that like their feet wet, which will protect the peat soils, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
We anticipated acidic bogs would have lower [f.sub.gw] values and
fens and swamps would have higher [f.sub.gw] values but were surprised by such clear-cut differences.
Mineral-rich (mainly calcium, but also magnesium and iron) groundwater-fed
fens are spread in regions where calcareous sediments lie close to the surface.
