Wild
cheetahs are down to under 10,000 from 100,000 a century ago with conventional wisdom blaming bigger predators for monopolizing available food as their habitat becomes restricted.
Fitted on three female and two male adult
cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) in Botswana, the collars recorded a total of 367 running episodes, 94 of them successful hunts, the researchers report in the June 13 Nature.
Now one UAE zoo has called in a global expert to help it care for its endangered
cheetahs. Dr Laurie Marker has spent her professional career trying to save the
cheetah, of which there are now just 10,000 left in the world.
"
Cheetahs and Greyhounds are known to use a rotary gallop Fin which the limbs fall in circular sequence around the body) and physically they are remarkably similar, yet there is this bewitching difference in maximum speed," says researcher Alan Wilson, Bsc., Ph.d.
"One minute, I was in the enclosure with the
cheetahs and the next it was biting my head."
Conflict between far mers and
cheetahs in Namibia is being mitigated in an unusual way.
The reintroduction programme will see a total of 15
cheetahs -- five in each site -- being brought to the country.
They became interested in
cheetahs during their visits to South Africa, where Gerry's sister Lesley lives, 30 miles from Cape Town.
