International Women’s Day & Fort Tryon Park History

Happy International Women’s Day from the Fort Tryon Park Trust!

Fort Tryon Park was an ancillary site of the Battle of Fort Washington, where the Continental Army took a strategic position at the top of Long Hill (today’s Linden Terrace) but was overwhelmed by British and Hessian troops. During the battle, MARGARET COCHRAN CORBIN became the first woman to fight in a war, taking over her fallen husband’s cannon. The Fort Tryon Park Trust celebrates her valor at our Battle of Fort Washington Commemoration each fall!
