- Richard DeVos cofounded direct-selling giant Amway. He died in September 2018.
- He and his high school friend Jay Van Andel (d. 2004) started Amway (short for "American Way") in 1959, selling multipurpose cleaner door-to-door.
- DeVos served as president until 1993. Today the company, now under the corporate umbrella of Alticor, is run by DeVos' and Andel's children.
- DeVos purchased the NBA's Orlando Magic in 1991. His family still owns the team.
