U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Plummer College in 1902, he graduated from the law department of the University of Virginia in 1904, was admitted to the bar in 1904, and commenced to practice law in Wytheville, Virginia. He served as Commonwealth Attorney of Wythe County (1908 to 1912), Assistant U.S. District Attorney (1920 to 1924), and served as U. S. District Attorney for the western district of Virginia (1924 to 1929). In 1929, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-first Congress, serving until 1931. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was again District Attorney for the western district of Virginia, serving from 1931 until his resignation in 1932. Retiring from public service, he resumed the practice of law, was a stockholder and an officer in the Wythe County National Bank, until his death.
