I'm heading back now. I hope I didn't miss any good songs on the jukebox. Cheyenne would never forgive me.

Sunny Smiles is a resident of Goodsprings in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[edit]

Sunny spends time in the Prospector Saloon with her dog, Cheyenne. She tells the Courier that Cheyenne will only attack on her command.[1] Sunny describes the saloon as a place that she can "get a stiff drink" while Cheyenne's stays cool.[2] She also mentions that if she were to miss anything good on the jukebox while addressing issues elsewhere, Cheyenne would never forgive her.[3]

Sunny sells hides from geckos she hunts and helps keep the town clear of radscorpions and coyotes.[4] When faced with the threat of the Powder Gangers, Sunny volunteers to help Ringo and defend the town.[5]

If asked about current events in the Mojave, Sunny will comment on the New California Republic, stating that they are a group of settlers and soldiers coming in from the west and although they are pushy, they make the roads safer.[6] She will also mention Caesar's Legion, stating that they have never been near Goodsprings, but that she has heard rumors of the group murdering and enslaving people.[7] She comments that the rumors could be from members of the NCR, started in an attempt to make themselves seem more useful in the area, and "less uninvited."[7]

If asked about any work to be done, she will mention to check out the safe in the schoolhouse, giving the Courier Bobby Pins and a copy of Locksmith's Reader in order to open it.[8] She will assist the Courier in learning some basic techniques for surviving in the wasteland, including creating campfires and using firearms.

Behind the scenes[edit]

In the April 17, 2010 prototype build of the game recovered from Obsidian Entertainment Xbox development kits, Sunny Smiles was voiced by Paige King. Not all of Sunny's voicelines were recorded at that moment. These voicelines are missing from the final released game, and instead replaced with voicelines voiced by Katherine Pawlak.

  4. Courier: "What do you do around here?"
Sunny Smiles: "I hunt geckos, mostly. The meat's pretty good and I can always find a buyer for the hides. I also help keep the town clear of radscorpions and coyotes. Not many people live in Goodsprings, so wildlife is always creeping in."

  5. Courier: "I'm going to help Ringo take on the powder gangers. I might need your help."
Sunny Smiles: "Say no more. I'm in."
    Courier: "Just like that?"
Sunny Smiles: "Just like that. I have a feeling that I'm going to end up fighting those guys one way or another, so I might as well get it over with. Joe Cobb talks about leaving us alone if we hand over Ringo, but I know his type. He and his friends will come after the town eventually."

  6. Courier: "NCR?"
Sunny Smiles: "The New California Republic. Bunch of settlers and soldiers coming in from the West, fixing on making Nevada their own. They can be right pushy, but the roads are safer 'cause of them, so I tend to let it go. Not that I got a choice."
Courier: "What does the NCR keep you safe from?"
Sunny Smiles: "Well, the wildlife for one thing. Rowdy locals for another. They're protecting their own. Just happens to help us. They've been holding off this other group from the East, too."

  7. 7.0 7.1 Courier: "What do you know about the other group?"
Sunny Smiles: "Got a funny name. Call themselves Caesar's Legion. Never seen 'em in these parts, so I couldn't tell you much. I hear rumors, that's about it. Supposedly they keep slaves and they got some real nasty ways of killing folks. But maybe that's just something folks in the NCR cooked up to make themselves seem more useful here. Less uninvited."
    (Sunny Smiles' dialogue)
  8. Courier: "I'm a little short on caps. I don't suppose there's any work available?"
Sunny Smiles: "Not in Goodsprings, no. But if you're up for a little scavenging, there's always the schoolhouse. Most of what's in there is junk, but there's this old safe that even Easy Pete wasn't able to crack with dynamite. If you want to take a shot at it, take these."
    (Sunny Smiles/Dialogue)
  9. Sunny Smiles: "Ah, hell's bells. There's not a day passes by I don't tell people not to come here by themselves. Some people, your word just isn't good enough for them. Then this happens. Well, it's part of life out here. Best to accept it. But you did what you promised, staying out here with me. Here's my end of the deal."
