Beatrix Russell

Feed a man for free. He'll be back asking for more. Feed a man a bullet. You won't hear from him again.

Beatrix Russell is a Ghoul who works for the Followers of the Apocalypse at the Old Mormon Fort in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[edit]

Beatrix Russel is a gun-for-hire for the Followers of the Apocalypse and is responsible for protecting supply shipments from thugs.[1] She joined to find a decent-paying job, but says it's "getting rather dull".[2] She states that she's been around long enough to "observe patterns of human behavior", finding physical and mental anguish fun to explore.[3]

She has a love for booze and liquor,[1][4][5] and expresses disappointment that the Followers won't let her "kick back and slog a brew at the end of the day".[2] She can be convinced to join Francine and James Garret at the Atomic Wrangler Casino if offered the prospect of booze at a discount.[4][5] She also loves Absinthe and states that she hasn't "had a taste of that in decades".[6] She mentions that the one Follower that she could talk to about liquor was transferred, with the rest of the doctors being "uptight about [her] kind of fun".[1]

She offers her opinions on the various factions and groups of the Mojave Wasteland. She says the Followers are "like saints" and the lack of charges for services "warms [the] heart".[7] She thinks that the NCR only care about obtaining water and electricity from Hoover Dam and resources from the region, viewing the locals as an inconvenience to stomp on.[8] She states that Mr. House was famous in the robotics industry prior to the war and that he seemed "charming in interviews" before he "became a recluse". She mentions that after he woke up nearly two-hundred years later, he "came back strong and killed a lot of people".[9] She thinks the Kings are like any other gang except with "better clothes", but states that The King has something special about him.[10] She describes the two Van Graff siblings as a "couple of Radscorpions".[11]

Notes[edit]

  • Killing her after completing the quest Wang Dang Atomic Tango will still result in Followers of the Apocalypse infamy.
  • She can be asked for advice while working as a guard with the Followers. The dialogue option to ask her will be gone once she starts working at the Atomic Wrangler Casino

Quotes[edit]

Appearances[edit]

Beatrix Russell appears in Fallout: New Vegas.

Behind the Scenes[edit]

  • Her advice "time you enjoy wasting isn't wasted time" is a quote from the 1912 novel Phrynette Married by Marthe Troly-Curtin.
  • Her advice "the only thing I know for certain is that I don't know nothing" is an adaption of Socrates' quote "One thing only I know, and that is that I know nothing."
  • Originally, Robert Lee wanted a Super Mutant as the third option for Wang Dang Atomic Tango but that was shut down, so he chose a ghoul instead. He also said that Beatrix "was inspired by one of my favorite philosophers, Bertrand Russell but with a world weary twist."[Ext 1]

Bugs[edit]

  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes when you pay her for sex she won't get off of the chair and won't move, which means having intercourse with her is impossible. This seems to occur after you've completed Debt Collector and have been given a free room at the Atomic Wrangler. Exiting the atomic wrangler, and reentering might fix this problem, but if exiting and entering doesn't work the first time on PS3 it won't work ever and neither will switching outfits, sleeping for any amount of time, or reloading the save. Nothing will work unless you happen to have a manual save during the short amount of in-game time between when you convince her to work for them and getting your permanent room.
    • Repair This is fixed in version 1 of YUP.
  • PCPC Xbox 360Xbox 360 She will follow you to your room after being paid for sex but then simply stand by the bed. There are no dialogue options offered to try to fix this, but if you look at the bed and select sleep, then exit once it asks you how long you want to sleep, she will be on the bed.
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 It is possible to get infinite experience using the Speech check about the Atomic Wrangler.
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3 If she is killed, and the player has the Bloody Mess perk, it will appear that her boots will be attached to her without her legs actually being there.

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 Courier: "So, who are you?"
Beatrix Russell: "I've been around a while. Currently working for the Followers as a gun for hire, but it's getting rather dull. Aside from protecting them from the occasional thug looking to intercept supply shipments, there isn't much to do around here. The one researcher I liked who I could chat up about liquor got transferred, and the rest of the docs are pretty uptight about my kind of fun."
    (Beatrix Russell's dialogue)
  2. 2.0 2.1 Courier: "What are you doing with the Followers?"
Beatrix Russell: "I joined up looking for a decent-paying job. Granted, the pay is all right, but they won't let me kick back and slog a brew at the end of the day. They're worried the filthy drunkies in detox seeing me drink will cause an immediate relapse. I say their rehab effort here is just a revolving door."
    (Beatrix Russell's dialogue)
  3. Courier: "I bet you've seen a lot over the years."
Beatrix Russell: "I've been around long enough to observe patterns of human behavior. Physical and mental anguish are especially exciting to explore."
    (Beatrix Russell's dialogue)
  4. 4.0 4.1 Courier: "[Speech] You'd be an independent - with a deep discount on the booze, maybe?"
Beatrix Russell: "[SUCCEEDED] Hmm. They do have a damn good selection of hooch over at the Wrangler. If I get to choose my customers, if I get to be a little rough with them, if my cut is fair, and if I get that discount? That just might work. Tell the Garrets I'll stop by to work out terms."
    (Beatrix Russell's dialogue)
  5. 5.0 5.1 Courier: "[Barter] One of the employee perks is a discount..."
Beatrix Russell: "[SUCCEEDED] Now you're talking. I suppose I could sleaze it up a bit for their customers if it means I have a non-stop supply of drink. Tell the Garrets I'm in. I'll make my way there shortly."
    (Beatrix Russell's dialogue)
  6. Courier: "Perhaps a bottle of Jacob's Absinthe might convince you?"
Beatrix Russell: "Absinthe?! I haven't had a taste of that in decades! If they keep bottles stocked at the Wrangler, you can count me in. I'll head that way and talk to Mr. Garret."
    (Beatrix Russell's dialogue)
  7. Courier: What do you think of the Followers of the Apocalypse?"
Beatrix Russell: "I don't know how they do it. They're like saints, those Followers. If they didn't charge for their services, I'd think they was crazy. But no, they're just naive. Warms your heart."
    (Beatrix Russell's dialogue)
  8. Courier: What do you think of the NCR?"
Beatrix Russell: "I reckon they care about getting water and electricity from the dam, and that's where it ends. The locals here are just an inconvenience to them, something to step over or stomp down. They're here for the resources, plain and simple."
    (Beatrix Russell's dialogue)
  9. Courier: What's your opinion of Mr. House?"
Beatrix Russell: "Before or after the human race shot itself in the foot? I been around long enough to have both opinions, see. Before the war, Mr. House was a famous captain of industry - robotics, to be specific. Seemed charming in interviews, until he became a recluse. Since the war, though? Didn't make a peep for near two hundred years - but when he came back, he came back strong and killed a lot of people."
    (Beatrix Russell's dialogue)
  10. Courier: What about The Kings?"
Beatrix Russell: "What about them? Pretty much the sort of gang you'd find anywhere else, just with better clothes. The King himself, though? He's got that something special you can't put a finger on. Too bad he likes girls with skin."
    (Beatrix Russell's dialogue)
  11. Courier: What do you know about the Van Graffs?"
Beatrix Russell: "A couple of Radscorpions, those two. Gloria is the stable one, but she'd slit your throat if there's a profit in it. Or rather she'd tell her brother to do it for her. Jean Baptiste is one of the sicker humans I've had the displeasure of observing."
    (Beatrix Russell's dialogue)
