Statement from Mayor Ted R. Green on the Recent Supreme Court RulingThe recent decision by the United States Supreme Court to scale back the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was not just a legal ruling, but a profound setback for our democracy. What was once one of the most powerful and hard-won pieces of legislation protecting fair representation in this nation has been weakened in a way that cannot be ignored. Here in East Orange, we are a proud and growing, multi-racial community—a living reflection of the diversity that defines not only our city, but our state and our country. That diversity is our strength. It is what fuels innovation, deepens understanding, and moves us closer to the promise of America at its best. Just yesterday morning, I visited Community Day Nursery, the oldest pre-school in our city, and I was reminded of what is truly at stake. I saw firsthand the faces of our future, representing every background, every story, and every dream that makes America what it is supposed to be—hopeful, diverse, and full of possibility. They are the reason we do this work. In that moment, I was reminded that our responsibility is not just to lead today, but to protect tomorrow. We cannot accept a future where our children inherit a democracy designed for them to fail. This decision is a grave injustice, but it cannot be the final word. In East Orange, we will continue working with partners across this state and this nation to ensure that progress is not reversed, but renewed. Our children are counting on us.
