Reviews
Hard to find a more soulful singer than Mr. John Edwards. This is his first of two solo albums and both are essential buys for anyone even remotely interested in 70s soul. This album has it all; sweet soul, raucous funky soul, churchy testifying soul, sexy boudoir soul, etc. Edwards’ voice is an instrument of power, range, nuance and skill in conveying any and every emotion your heart can handle. A real singer’s singer who was given songs by some top songwriters of the day; Jimmy Lewis, Sam Dees, Bobby & Linda Womack, Frank Johnson, etc. A totally brilliant record in every way. John later went on to replace Philippé Wynne as lead singer of The Spinners. And even though every Edwards performance is impressive he never reached the same vocal heights, in a group setting, that he achieved on his two solo albums. He stayed with the Spinners until 2000 when he was forced to retire due to a debilitating stroke. He’s still alive, I believe, and I wish him the best. He means so much to so many soul music fans, probably more than he knows.- The cover of this album foretells that John Edwards will join The Spinners in a few years' time.
