I bought this in 2026 so I’m not sure wether I have the 2017 or the 2020 reissue. But I think I have the 2017 because I didn’t have the 180 gram hype sticker. Also I dont have a scale to weigh my records but I compared the weights of the discs with my 2019 In The Court Of The Crimson King pressing that is also 200 grams and they feel the same.
This album is hard to find so the 45rpm is what I landed on at my local record store since that’s all they had received in. So I jumped on it right away. If it was the 33rpm that’s the one I would have pulled the trigger on.
Now I have to say, I am so glad that I have the 45rpm and I think this record is perfect for the 45rpm format. I’m usually in the 33rpm camp mainly because of convenience and flow of tracks. Meaning I don’t like cutting the musical experience too short between flips. This album however has 4 tracks which means 1 track per side for the 45rpm. They are also very distinct tracks with considerable lengths which to me it being on 33rpm does not add to the “flow” experience. This version allows for the best fidelity for each track and man does it sound AMAZING! This is literally insane how good this sounds.
You would probably be very happy with the 33rpm, but for me the 45rpm is where it’s at for this record. The overall gatefold package and top tier fidelity does it justice.

Compared it to other original pressings, the Japanese pressing plays fast and the sound is thin.

This version of the LP comes across as rather boring. It's a great album, but this pressing sounds muffled and lacks groove. The digital version via Tidal is much more enjoyable. A version from Analogue Productions is definitely needed.
The vinyl quality is superb. This record makes you feel like you've never heard Head Hunters before. Highly recommended.
Edited one month agoPicked up an -1A/-1A pressing this afternoon, definitely changed my appreciation for this album for the better. Originals are still relatively cheap, still a good time to pick up an original pressing (mine was $4)
Not a bad early reissue since I don't love the album to pay the crazy money or an OG or an Analogue Productions.
Find I do need to give it a pinch more treble but that's about it
I don't know why Mike Clark is mentioned as the drummer on the first two tracks, because there is only one drummer on the entire album and he is Harvey Mason.
Mike Clark began working with Herbie & The Headhunters with the recording of the album Thrust (1974).- Edited 3 months agoThis version of Headhunters slaps. It has awesome punch and low end. It doesn't have as much separation or soundstage as I would like, but the bass kicks me in the chest, and the muted guitar and organ tickle my senses, so I'll give it full marks anyway.
