Chilly Willy (English)

Notes:

Created by Walter Lantz Studio director Paul J. Smith, for the debut cartoon “Chilly Willy” (1953), the character was refined into the cute, but sometimes surprisingly aggressive, penguin we best know in two cartoons directed by Tex Avery: “I’m Cold” (1954) which introduced Smedley the Hound as a recurring adversary, and “The Legend of Rockabye Point” (1955) with a greedy polar bear who very likely evolved into Chilly’s oft-seen comic book foe “Bully Bear”.

Chilly Willy’s comic book debut was an unconventional and indirect one, as he first appeared as a guest-star in the “Homer Pigeon” feature, sharing several months’ worth of stories with Homer (whom he’d quickly eclipse in popularity), finally achieving a feature (and later a comic book) of his own.

First comic book appearance: Walter Lantz New Funnies (Dell, 1946 Series) #211 – (September 1954).
