Jeb Stuart (English)

Description:

Jeb Stuart Smith was named after his idol, Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II under the name Jeb Stuart, and was placed in command of an M3 Stuart tank. Supernatural forces assigned the ghost of General J.E.B. Stuart to be the guardian of Jeb Stuart and his tank crew, however only Jeb himself could see or hear him. Sometime after the war ended Jeb was promoted to the rank of General, and beginning in the early 1950s he served as the head of the military side of Task Force X.

Notes:

  • Jeb Stuart Smith first appeared in G.I. Combat (DC, 1957 series) #87 (April-May 1961).
  • Jeb first saw the ghost of General J.E.B. Stuart in G.I. Combat (DC, 1957 series) #88 (June-July 1961).
  • Jeb was first identified as a Sergeant, and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, in The Brave and the Bold (DC, 1955 series) #52 (February-March 1964). He had been referred to as a Lieutenant twice prior to this: once on the cover of G.I. Combat (DC, 1957 series) #95 (August-September 1962) and again in a story in issue #100 (June-July 1963). The cover can be considered artistic license, while the story can either be considered as an error or as being presented out-of-order.
  • Jeb was referred to as Jeb Stuart Smith in eleven out of the first nineteen stories, and as simply Jeb Stuart six times in that same period (plus once on a cover). G.I. Combat (DC, 1957 series) #100 (June-July 1963) established that his father was named Lt. Jeb Stuart. He was last referred to as Jeb Stuart Smith in The Brave and the Bold (DC, 1955 series) #52 (February-March 1964), however in that same story during his promotion ceremony he was referred to as Sgt. Stuart.
  • Jeb married Princess Azeela in G.I. Combat (DC, 1957 series) #139 (December 1969-January 1970), but she died at the story's end.
  • It was revealed in Secret Origins (DC, 1986 series) #14 (May 1987) that Jeb was eventually promoted to the rank of General, and that he served as the head of the military side of Task Force X beginning in the early 1950s.
  • The New 52 version of Jeb Stuart first appeared in G.I. Combat (DC, 2012 series) #5 (December 2012) and died in issue #7 (February 2013).
