Tom Mix first appeared in a comic book in 1935 with a one-page comic ad for the radio series "Tom Mix and His Ralston Straight Shooters" (sponsored by Ralston Purina and voiced by Artells Dickson) in New Fun #1-2 February-March 1935). His presence in the comic book medium continued soon after. He appeared in Popular Comics #4 (Dell, 1936 series) #4 (May 1936). He first appeared at Western in Crackajack Funnies (Western, 1938 series) #1 (June 1938), at Ralston-Purina in Tom Mix Comics (Ralston-Purina Company, 1940 series) #1 (September 1940), at DC in Real Fact Comics (DC, 1946 series) #5 (November-December 1946), at Fawcett in Tom Mix Western (Fawcett, 1948 series) #1 (January 1948), at Charlton in Six-Gun Heroes (Charlton, 1954 series) #27 (June-July 1954) and at AC in Great American Western (AC, 1987 series) #3 (1988).

This character is based on western film actor Thomas Mix.
