A synthezoid created by Professor Phineas Horton, the Human Torch burst into flame when exposed to oxygen. He learned to control the condition, enabling him to fly and hurl fireballs.
In the 1940s and 1950s, the Human Torch had a sidekick named Toro the Flaming Kid.
The Human Torch first appeared in Marvel Comics (Marvel, 1939 series) #1 [First Printing] (October 1939). He used the secret identity of "Jim Hammond" for the first time in Marvel Mystery Comics (Marvel, 1939 series) #4 (February 1940), although it was spelled "Hamond" in early issues. He took a sidekick, Toro the Flaming Kid, in The Human Torch (Marvel, 1940 series) #2 (Fall 1940). On April 30, 1945, the Human Torch killed Adolph Hitler in his bunker, as first seen in Young Men (Marvel, 1953 series) #24 (December 1953). His first appearance in the Marvel Universe was in Fantastic Four Annual (Marvel, 1963 series) #4 (November 1966), where he was briefly revived by the Mad Thinker. Ultron used a duplicate of The Human Torch's body to create the synthezoid called The Vision (first stated to be the Human Torch's actual body, then said to be made from the Torch's spare parts, then from a temporal copy created by Immortus). The Human Torch was later revived again by the Avengers in Avengers West Coast (Marvel, 1989 series) #50 (November 1989).
First appearance in Earth-9200 in Maestro: War War M (Marvel, 2022 series) #1 (April 2022).
