About the Office of the Mayor

The Office of the Mayor provides executive leadership for the City of Frederick. The Mayor works with professional staff to set policy direction, guide City operations, and ensure departments are aligned in serving the needs of Frederick’s residents, businesses, and neighborhoods.

Mayor Michael O’Connor is a lifelong Frederick resident with a background in local media, community service, and public leadership.

Early Life & Education

Michael O’Connor was born in Frederick. He graduated from Saint John’s at Prospect Hall High School (now Saint John’s Catholic Prep) in 1984, and Saint Bonaventure University, with a double major in history and mass communication, in 1988.

Employment

Michael spent nearly 20 years in local media as a reporter, news director, talk show host, senior producer, and moderator with WJEJ (1988–1989), WFMD-WFRE (1989–1997), and Comcast Cable Channel 10 (1997–2006).

Prior to becoming Mayor in 2017, he served as business manager at Saint Katharine Drexel Roman Catholic Congregation and as adjunct faculty at Frederick Community College (2000–2009).

Community Service

Michael was first elected to the Board of Aldermen in 2009 and re-elected in 2013. He chaired the Streets and Sanitation Committee and served as aldermanic liaison to:

  • Airport Commission
  • Celebrate Frederick & Delaplaine Visual Arts Center Boards
  • Historic Preservation Commission
  • Parks and Recreation Commission

He also represented the Aldermen on the Blight and Vacant Property Task Force.

Board Membership

Michael serves on the Community Action Agency and Tourism Council Boards, the Maryland Municipal League Board of Directors and Legislative Committee, and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Board of Directors.

Personal Life

Michael resides in Neighborhood Advisory Council 6 with his wife, Tammy, their two daughters, and two dogs.
