Supernatural's Sam and Dean Winchester have battled every kind of monster, demon, and spirit imaginable. This summer, the brothers are set to battle something entirely new.

The new comic series features many variant covers, including blank covers and photo variants featuring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. The creative team behind the series includes writer Greg Pak (Planet Hulk) and artist Eder Messias (Spider-Man: The Lost Hunt). Since the television series ran for so long and covered so much ground, it will be interesting to see how the team keeps things fresh.

The official press release for the series shares even more details: "THE BROTHERS WINCHESTER RETURN! Get ready to hit the road again with Dean and Sam as they prowl the highways and byways of small-town America in search of demonic wrongdoing to put right! Set between the foundational first and second seasons of the landmark television series, this brand-new title from acclaimed author GREG PAK (Darth Vader, Lilo & Stitch) and preternaturally gifted artist EDER MESSIAS (Sam Wilson: Captain America) brings readers back to where the dark magic first began — and reveals a disturbing new threat that the bickering brothers will have to face before they can return to hunting down the demon who killed their mother."

The new comic series takes place between Season 1 and Season 2. The comic aims not only to expand on the stories but also on the monsters within the universe. An official summary from Dynamite Entertainment for Supernatural #9 gives readers more information: “The Winchester brothers have tried to follow in their father’s footsteps, fighting evil of all kinds. They’ve never met a monster they couldn’t handle... until now.” What could this new monster be?

Despite Supernatural ending after 15 seasons, the adventure lives on in Dynamite Entertainment’s Supernatural comics. Currently, seven issues are available, with two more confirmed to be on the way. Dynamite Entertainment has also released a Valentine’s Day Special featuring the Winchester brothers.

Vampires, ghosts, skinwalkers, reapers, and djinn are just a few of the different monsters the Winchester brothers have battled. To truly shock fans, Pak may need to dig deep into Supernatural lore or possibly create an entirely new monster. Will readers see vampire sharks or maybe even the Nuckelavee?

Readers have also speculated about whether the series could cross over with another franchise. Hack/Slash, Army of Darkness, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer would all be perfect matches. This would not be the first crossover the brothers have participated in. In season 13, episode 16, titled “Scoobynatural,” they famously crossed over with Scooby-Doo.

Dynamite Entertainment has also announced a Castiel-starring solo series. With the show’s massive cast of characters, the possibilities are endless. A series focused on a young Bobby Singer and John Winchester in a monster-of-the-week format would likely have fans cheering with excitement.

Given the popularity of the franchise, it is surprising that it took this long for another comic book incarnation to arrive. DC Comics’ WildStorm imprint previously published Supernatural comics, including an early Geoff Johns story illustrated by Phil Hester.

Supernatural #9 releases on July 29.
