The release date for Sony Pictures’ highly-anticipated 28 Years Later movie has finally been announced. It will serve as a sequel to Danny Boyle’s cult classic post-apocalyptic thriller 28 Days Later, which was originally released back in 2002.

Per Deadline, Sony Pictures confirmed that 28 Years Later has officially been scheduled to arrive in theaters next summer on June 20, 2025, just in time for the first installment’s 23rd anniversary. Because of this, the sequel will now be debuting in the same month as a few high-profile movies, including Ana de Armas’ John Wick spinoff Ballerina, Ethan Hawke’s The Black Phone 2, and the live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie. During the original theatrical run of 28 Days Later, the film was considered a commercial success, with a total gross of over $84 million at the global box office against a reported budget of around $8 million. Up to this day, the horror classic still holds a Certified Fresh rating of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 237 reviews.

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight teases what fans can expect from the highly-anticipated sequel movie to the acclaimed BBC drama.

Boyle is coming back to the horror franchise to direct the long-awaited 28 Years Later movie from a screenplay he co-wrote with returning scribe Alex Garland (Civil War). When the project was first announced in January 2024, it was also revealed that Sony is planning to turn 28 Years Later into a trilogy with The Marvels’ Nia DaCosta directing the second part. So far, the only confirmed cast members for the upcoming sequel are Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven the Hunter), Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter), and Jack O’Connell (This Is England). At the moment, details about their characters are still being kept under wraps. Boyle and Garland are also producing the project alongside Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice and Bernie Bellew.

Will Cillian Murphy Join 28 Years Later?

Before receiving acclaim for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer biopic, 28 Days Later was Cillian Murphy’s first major movie project that received box office success. In the 2002 film, the Irish actor portrayed the role of bicycle courier Jim, who wakes up from a coma only to find out that society has collapsed due to an epidemic caused by a "rage virus." Since 28 Years Later was announced, some reports suggested that Murphy might potentially reprise his role in the sequel. Even though Sony remains silent on Murphy’s casting, the studio did confirm that the Oscar winner will be involved as an executive producer.

Fantastic Four Cast Reveal Reignites Fan Campaign for Cillian Murphy as Doctor Doom

Now that the starring cast members have been revealed for the Fantastic Four reboot, fans are pushing for Cillian Murphy as the villain.

In a previous interview, Murphy recalled his experience working on 28 Days Later, admitting that he didn’t know that the project was actually a zombie movie. He also shared his thoughts on why the 2002 film continues to resonate with people today. "Before 28 Days Later, there weren’t that many zombie movies — it was kind of a dead genre. So Danny and Alex rebooted it," he explained. "The amount of memes — I do know what a meme is — that everybody sent me during the pandemic of 28 Days Later was crazy. It just shows that good writing is prescient, it always remains prescient and relative."

28 Years Later premieres in theaters on June 20, 2025.
