Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage.

1 September has never been more exciting for budding witches and wizards.

It's Back to Hogwarts Day when characters from the Harry Potter books return to classes at the magical Hogwarts academy.

The day was marked by Harry Potter author JK Rowling on Thursday morning with a tweet which has since been deleted:

"If you're at Kings Cross, the Potter, Granger-Weasley and Malfoy families are there too. Albus Severus starts school today #19YearsLater."

But even acclaimed writers make mistakes. With eight million followers the author was quickly alerted to an error in the post which she then corrected.

I got the year wrong: blame #CursedChild! In my head it's already 19 years later! #BackToHogwartsImage source, @jk_rowling/Twitter

As any Harry Potter fan well knows, Harry Potter's middle child Albus hasn't started school yet.

It will be 1 September 2017 when he actually sets off on the Hogwarts Express at Kings Cross from Platform 9 3/4. Fans took to social media to discuss the error.

@kirstypottter, external tweeted: "JK Rowling getting the 19 years date wrong was just the last straw."

@Mugglenet , externalposted: "Math never was her strong suit. It's okay @jk_rowling, we love you."

@Marta_25 , externaltweeted: "People keep calm, she is only human. Perfect Queen but still human and everyone can make a mistake."

But the error was a mere technical glitch for some fans who were simply too excited that Back to Hogwarts Day had arrived.

The hashtag #BacktoHogwarts has generated more than 200,000 tweets, and even Snapchat brought back its Harry Potter filter to mark the day.
