These suttas reveal the gentleness, compassion, power, and penetrating wisdom of the Buddha. Included are teachings on mindfulness (Mahasatipatthana Sutta); on morality, concentration, and wisdom (Subha Sutta); on dependent origination (Mahanidrana Sutta); on the roots and causes of wrong views (Brahmajala Sutta); and a long description of the Buddha's last days and passing away (Mahaparinibbana Sutta); along with a wealth of practical advice and insight for all those travelling along the spiritual path.
Venerable Sumedho Thera writes in his foreword: "[These suttas] are not meant to be 'sacred scriptures' that tell us what to believe. One should read them, listen to them, think about them, contemplate them, and investigate the present reality, the present experience, with them. Then, and only then, can one insightfully know the truth beyond words."
Introduced with a vivid account of the Buddha's life and times and a short survey of his teachings, The Long Discourses of the Buddha brings us closer in every way to the wise and compassionate presence of Gotama Buddha and his path of truth.

Review
"These teachings... unfold in fascinating procession of scenarios that show the Buddha in living dialogue with people from the many different strata of ancient Indian society... Replete with drama, with reasoned argument, and with illuminating parables and similes, these discourses exhibit the Buddha in the full range of his wisdom, majestic sublimity, and compassionate humanity." ― Branches of Light

The Suttanipāta: An Ancient Collection of the Buddha’s Discourses Together with Its Commentaries
This milestone volume in our bestselling Teachings of the Buddha series translates the Suttanipāta, or “Group of Discourses,” a collection of discourses ascribed to the Buddha that includes some of the most popular suttas of the Pāli canon, among them the Discourse on Loving-Kindness. The suttas are primarily in verse, though several are in mixed prose and verse, and the commentary, the Paramatthajotikā, relates the background story to each sutta and explains each verse in detail.
Translator Bhikkhu Bodhi provides an insightful, in-depth introduction, a guide to the individual suttas, extensive notes, a list of parallels to the discourses of the Suttanipāta, and a list of the numerical sets mentioned in the commentaries.

The Definitive Translation of the Pāli Canon
To ensure that the Buddha’s legacy would survive the ravages of time, his direct disciples compiled records of his teachings soon after his passing. In the Theravāda Buddhist tradition, which prevails in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, these records are regarded as the definitive “word of the Buddha.” Preserved in Pāli, an ancient Indian language closely related to the language that the Buddha spoke, this full compilation of texts is known as the Pāli Canon.
At the heart of the Buddha’s teaching were the suttas (Sanskrit sūtras), his discourses and dialogues. The suttas were compiled into collections called “Nikāyas,” of which there are four, each organized according to a different principle. The Dīgha Nikāya consists of longer discourses; the Majjhima Nikāya of middle-length discourses; the Saṃyutta Nikāya of thematically connected discourses; and the Aṅguttara Nikāya of numerically patterned discourses.
Bhikkhu Bodhi’s newest anthology
The renowned translator Bhikkhu Bodhi has crafted this anthology of suttas from the Samyutta Nikaya to enable students of Early Buddhism to penetrate into the heart of the Buddha’s teachings on the four noble truths and the eightfold path as directly and clearly as possible. The aim is to attain direct insight into foundational Buddhist teachings on liberation.
The Definitive Introduction to the Buddha's Teachings, In His Own Words
The American scholar-monk Bhikkhu Bodhi, whose voluminous translations have won widespread acclaim, here presents selected discourses of the Buddha from the Pali canon, the earliest record of what the Buddha taught. Divided into ten thematic chapters, In the Buddha’s Words reveals the full scope of the Buddha’s discourses, from family life and marriage to renunciation and the path of insight. A concise, informative introduction precedes each chapter, guiding the reader toward a deeper understanding of the texts that follow.
Offers a Complete Translation of the Digha Nikaya, the Long Discourses of the Buddha
This collection—among the oldest records of the historical Buddha’s original teachings, given in India two and a half thousand years ago—consists of thirty-four longer-length suttas, or discourses, distinguished as such from the middle-length and shorter suttas of the other collections.
These suttas reveal the gentleness, compassion, power, and penetrating wisdom of the Buddha. Included are teachings on mindfulness (Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta); on morality, concentration, and wisdom (Subha Sutta); on dependent origination (Mahānidrāna Sutta); on the roots and causes of wrong views (Brahmajāla Sutta); and a long description of the Buddha’s last days and passing away (Mahāparinibbāna Sutta); along with a wealth of practical advice and insight for all those travelling along the spiritual path.
Discover The Original Teachings of the Buddha in this Thorough Translation of Some of the Oldest Buddhist Texts in the World
Like the River Ganges flowing down from the Himalayas, the entire Buddhist tradition flows down to us from the teachings and deeds of the historical Buddha, who lived and taught in India during the fifth century B.C.E. To ensure that his legacy would survive the ravages of time, his direct disciples compiled records of the Buddha’s teachings soon after his passing.

Highly recommended for Buddhist practitioners
Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2025Format: HardcoverI'm a Chan practitioner and I don't know why more of us--Mahayanists or Theravadins--don't read the Pali Canon. These are Buddha's teachings as he gave them, or as close to as we're going to get. I've just finished the Middle Length Discourses and started the Long Discourses. Reading these feels like immersing one's mind in the Dharma.

This is the latest and most beneficial translation of the "Long Discourses of the Buddha".
Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2024Format: HardcoverHighly recommended to take advantage of this latest English translation.
I've now purchased and listened to, and read the Wisdom Publications, high quality, these volumes will last long, they are well bound, and on special long lasting paper.
I highly recommend studying these Pali translations into English, take advantage of these volumes.
I'm re-studying/listening to the "Middle Length Discourses" at present, and I've read a few pages of these "Long Discourses" which are equally excellently translated from the Pali texts.

Nice
Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2020Format: HardcoverThe quality of the dust jacket, book cover, and pages is excellent. Before this I've read up what I could find on Buddhism online, but this book is still quite valuable. It has many stories, parables, and teachings that which can't be found online that reveals significantly more about Buddhism, some of which being extremely crucial. I have long said that only holy books can best represent a religion and show its true beauty and I stand affirmed reading this. There are some who say that reading the Majjhima first would be crucial since it explains a lot of the stuff you find briefly touched on in the Digha but from my reading, concepts introduced in the Digha are well-explained and by itself explain the fundamentals of Buddhism and much more. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who wants to seriously talk about Buddhism or know what Buddhism actually is about.

Lovely Edition
Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2019Format: HardcoverI love this super well-footnoted (there are over 1,000!) translation and the pages, cover, binding etc. are of high quality. Every rare once in a while there is a misprint but painstaking care with the work is what shines through on page after page. There are some beautiful illustrations including, my personal favorite, a likeness of Sariputta. The clarity of the rendering in modern English is making it possible for me to understand passages that were gobbledygook in the hands of past translators. I highly recommend this one if you are trying to work your way through the whole Canon.

but I love it. The book consists of word-by-word accounts of ...
Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2016Format: KindleRepays endless study. I started reading this book 15 years ago, and I still pick it up and read formerly unread parts, as well as re-reading parts I've already read. It may not be for everyone, but I love it. The book consists of word-by-word accounts of lessons given by the Buddha himself. There are several thousand pages of these, in this book and others. For years I thought that Buddhism was something mysterious that you had to intuit the meaning of. I thought hardly anything was directly known of the man himself. I was wrong on both counts. This is a complex book, hundreds of pages long, but it is the first book in the series of books that traditional Buddhists consider their "Scriptures." For someone who wants increased knowledge about the Buddha and his ideas, this is a great starting place. But, I must admit, it takes patience and study - though they are amply rewarded over time.

Excellent translation.
Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2018Format: HardcoverWhile dense, this translation has an excellent introduction, profoundly useful notes and references throughout. As a beginner at understanding the concepts of buddhism, I found this honest and comprehensive translation of the Digha Nikaya of the Pali canon to be a very useful way to learn a lot more. While I still feel I don't understand a great deal about buddhism and the points made by the buddha, but it's only a quarter of the canon and I've only read through the text once so far.

Martin Mercado4 out of 5 starsVerified PurchaseNice to have the Digha Nikaya on a book.
Reviewed in Mexico on November 28, 2022Format: HardcoverContains the long discourses of the Buddha.
This group of discourses, in my opinion, have some discourses for which I haven't found an equivalent in the MN or SN, couldn't say if that's bad or good, but in my case due to that I use the DN far less than the MN or SN.
One aspect I didn't like so much is the translation. I felt some the Maurice's commentaries kind of atypical.
But that's some aspect that caught my attention, I'm not an expert, just notice that.
Other than that great.

ヴィルーパ4 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase手頃な価格のパーリ原典訳
Reviewed in Japan on May 18, 2013Format: Hardcover

dah5 out of 5 starsVerified PurchaseDeep ideas, often placed in an entertaining fairy tale setting! (5 stars are for translation and presentation)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 6, 2017Format: HardcoverI believe that there is much of great value in the philosophy, ethics and psychology of Buddhism. Here, these ideas are often placed in a vibrantly colourful setting; with glimpses of life in ancient India - and much legendary material. In his foreword, Ven. Sumedho (an eminent Buddhist Abbott) stresses that these '.. are not meant to be 'sacred scriptures' which tell us what to believe'; and the translator (himself a devout Buddhist) has no hesitation in pointing out the variable quality, plausibility and authenticity.
Indeed, there's material here which feels as if it was inserted during transmission, e.g. in a pious attempt to make the Buddha appear superhuman. Sometimes there are statements which conflict with the general tenor of the teachings, while some suttas are like fairy tales (I liked the Buddha's response when a celestial minstrel gently roused him from meditation with, of all things, a mildly erotic love song!).
The translation is enjoyable to read, modern, without being too colloquial. The removal of many repetitions, though inevitably breaking the flow in places, has the compensation of making a single volume possible (and the occasional inferior sutta less time-consuming!).
