About the author
Follow authors to get new release updates, plus improved recommendations.I’m Brandon Sanderson, and I write stories of the fantastic: fantasy, science fiction, and thrillers.
Defiant, the fourth and final volume of the series that started with Skyward in 2018, comes out in November 2023, capping an already book-filled year that will see the releases of all four Secret Projects: Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and Secret Project Four (with its official title reveal coming October 2023). These four books were all initially offered to backers of the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time.
November 2022 saw the release of The Lost Metal, the seventh volume in the Mistborn saga, and the final volume of the Mistborn Era Two featuring Wax & Wayne. The third era of Mistborn is slated to be written after the first arc of the Stormlight Archive wraps up.
In November 2020 we saw the release of Rhythm of War—the fourth massive book in the New York Times #1 bestselling Stormlight Archive series that began with The Way of Kings—and Dawnshard (book 3.5), a novella set in the same world that bridges the gaps between the main releases. This series is my love letter to the epic fantasy genre, and it’s the type of story I always dreamed epic fantasy could be. The fifth volume, Wind and Truth, is set for release in fall 2024.
Most readers have noticed that my adult fantasy novels are in a connected universe called the Cosmere. This includes The Stormlight Archive, both Mistborn series, Elantris, Warbreaker, and various novellas available on Amazon, including The Emperor’s Soul, which won a Hugo Award in 2013. In November 2016 all of the existing Cosmere short fiction was released in one volume called Arcanum Unbounded. If you’ve read all of my adult fantasy novels and want to see some behind-the-scenes information, that collection is a must-read.
I also have three YA series: The Rithmatist (currently at one book), The Reckoners (a trilogy beginning with Steelheart), and Skyward. For young readers I also have my humorous series Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians, which had its final book, Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians, come out in 2022. Many of my adult readers enjoy all of those books as well, and many of my YA readers enjoy my adult books, usually starting with Mistborn.
Additionally, I have a few other novellas that are more on the thriller/sci-fi side. These include the Legion series, as well as Perfect State and Snapshot. There’s a lot of material to go around!
Good starting places are Mistborn (a.k.a. The Final Empire), Skyward, Steelheart,The Emperor’s Soul, and Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians. If you’re already a fan of big fat fantasies, you can jump right into The Way of Kings.
I was also honored to be able to complete the final three volumes of The Wheel of Time, beginning with The Gathering Storm, using Robert Jordan’s notes.
Sample chapters from all of my books are available at brandonsanderson.com—and check out the rest of my site for chapter-by-chapter annotations, deleted scenes, and more.

A Treasure Trove for Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere Fans
Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2023Format: PaperbackThis collection is a must-read for Sanderson's Cosmere fans. It encapsulates the essence of Cosmere, bringing together stories representing each of its distinct planets with their fully realized and unique magic systems. The book includes the Hugo Award-winning novella 'The Emperor's Soul,' an excerpt from the graphic novel 'White Sand,' and the never-before-published 'Edgedancer,' a thrilling new novella of the Stormlight Archive.
The book is not just a collection of stories, but a journey across the cosmos that Sanderson could only have envisioned. It explores six worlds in all, with nine astonishing works of short fiction. This includes tales from Sel ('The Hope of Elantris' and 'The Emperor's Soul'), Scadrial ('The Eleventh Metal,' 'Allomancer Jak and the Pits of Eltania, Episodes Twenty-eight Through Thirty,' and 'Mistborn: Secret History'), Taldain ('White Sand'), Threnody ('Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell'), First of the Sun ('Sixth of the Dusk'), and Roshar ('Edgedancer').
One of the standout features of this collection is how it provides answers to the mysteries of the Cosmere universe. This compilation not only tells stories but also adds depth and understanding to the interconnected universe that Sanderson has meticulously crafted over the years. Each story begins with unique star maps for each system and an illustration that depicts an event in the respective story, further enhancing the world-building and visualization of the Cosmere.
As for the writing itself, it embodies what fans have come to expect from Sanderson - well-crafted, engaging, and imaginative. Whether you're new to Sanderson's work or a devoted fan, 'Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection' is an essential volume that you will not want to miss.

Very good collection
Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2016Format: KindleGood addition for any hardcore Sanderson fan. Admittedly, most of the stories had been released singly before being collected here, but I never got around to most of them when they were singles, and now I'm happy to have read all of them.
Emperor's Soul - I had read this one previously, and loved it. The intro and Sanderson commentary do add something to it.
Hope of Elantris - Eh. Decent. Sanderson's explanation of where it came from made it make a lot more sense, but it still feels like a fluff piece.
Eleventh Metal - Enjoyable Mistborn prequel, which explains a few things about Kelsier.
Allomancer Jak - Heh. These are so much fun. I really wish Sanderson would write more episodes. Picture the Lone Ranger writing his memoirs, and Tonto adding commentary (including a lot of, 'why do these things never happen when I'm around?')
Mistborn: Secret History (minor spoilers; best read after Bands of Mourning) - Absolutely fascinating look at what happened to Kelsier after [spoiler] his death. One detail: his response to finding out there is a god is to punch him.
White Sand - I'd already read the graphic novel version before reading this, and I think that spoiled my enjoyment of the prose version. All in all, I preferred the graphic novel.
Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell - Very entertaining. Sort of a zombie apocalypse take on a ghost story.
Sixth of the Dusk - Possibly my favorite in the collection. I like the depiction of the world, and the, er, more realistic mentality of the aliens with their sort-of prime directive.
Edgedancer - Very long Stormlight novella. Fun, but Lift is not one of my favorite characters, so I got a bit tired of her, and I would pick it up, read a bit, then put it down for a few days.

*Review from The Illustrated Page*
Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2017Format: KindleI’m a huge fan of Brandon Sanderson’s interrelated worlds – the Cosmere. Obviously, I had to read this collection of shorter Cosmere stories (short stories and novellas). While it took me a while to get to it, better late than never!
This collection is probably not a great starting point to those unfamiliar with Sanderson’s Cosmere work. While some of the stories stand independently, many tie in to his novels. In particular, you really need to have read the original Mistborn trilogy before reading Mistborn: Secret History. I would instead suggest The Emperor’s Soul or Sixth of Dusk as shorter Cosmere works that can be read on their own. Or The Way of Kings, Elantris, or Mistborn: The Final Empire if you’d prefer to start with a novel.
However, if you’re already a fan of Sanderson’s work, you’re bound to enjoy Arcanum Unbounded! Even though I’d already read a number of the novellas included in the collection, it’s still nice to have print copies of them for ease of potential rereading. I also loved how it included introductions to each world contained in the series, written by the character Khriss.
The collection begins with the world of Sel, where the novel Elantris was set. This section contained the short story “The Hope of Elantris” and the novella The Emperor’s Soul. “The Hope of Elantris” is set within the same time span of the novel Elantris and follows a girl named Matisse as she tries to protect the children of Elantris during the invasion. It’s a sweet story (and one available for free on the author’s site), but it doesn’t pack much of a punch. I found it the weakest link in the collection.
On the other hand, I love The Emperor’s Soul. It’s probably one of my favorite things Sanderson has ever written. Since I’d already reviewed it separately, I skipped rereading this time around. But I know that one day I will want to come back to it.
The next world up is Scadrial, home of the Mistborn books. The story “The Eleventh Metal” gives some backstory to Kelsier, specifically his training right after he gained his Mistborn powers. It’s a fairly short story that was written for an RPG, to give unfamiliar players an introduction to the world. As such, it’s fairly simple.
There’s one other story about Kelsier in this collection – the novella, Mistborn: Secret History. It’s another one that I’ve read and reviewed separately, I won’t say a whole lot here. Except, this is one that’s full of spoilers for the Mistborn original trilogy, so new readers beware.
The last Scadrial story was also written for an RPG – “Allomancer Jak and the Pits of Eltania, Episodes 28 through 30.” In the Alloy of Law era books, the newspaper inserts contain fragments of a pulpy adventure serial about Allomancer Jak. This story is three of those serials, with snarky annotations from Jak’s Terrisman steward. The annotations were wonderful and probably made this the funniest story in the collection.
Roshar, the home of The Way of Kings, is the only other world with a full length novel to make an appearance in Arcanum Unbounded. The novella Edgedancer is exclusive to this collection and follows one of my favorite characters from the Stormlight Archive series – Lift! I was so excited when I heard Sanderson was writing a novella for her (and apparently she’s going to take a larger role in the novels to come!). She’s wonderfully witty, vibrant and all around spunky. In this novella, she leaves Azimir for the city of Yeddaw, where the mysterious Herald she knows as “Darkness” is now working. I enjoyed this novella so much, and if you love Lift as much as I do, you need to read it!
The world of Taldain is the setting of White Sand, which is currently being adapted into a graphic novel. Arcanum Unbounded contains an excerpt of the graphic novel and Sanderson’s original first few chapters, but I’ll admit that I skipped these. I don’t like excerpts. They just make me hungrier for the full story. Besides, I’d rather wait and read the full graphic novel in color instead of the grey scale excerpt in Arcanum Unbounded.
I also skipped Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell, the only story as of yet set on the world of Threnody. I’d already read and reviewed this one, but I liked it a lot the first time around. It was originally written for George R. Martin’s Dangerous Women anthology, and it has a great female protagonist – Silence, a middle aged mother who’s very much the independent frontier woman.
Arcanum Unbounded contained one last story that was new to me. I’ve been meaning to read the novella Sixth of the Dusk forever but had somehow never gotten around to it. It’s set on the world of First of the Sun, which is being visited by spacefaring people from another world. There’s no word on who these aliens are, but I’m suspecting that it may be a future Scadrial. The story follows Sixth of the Dusk, a trapper on the dangerous island of Patji. The world is changing, and his traditional way of life is being threatened. This novella was simply lovely, and I hope Sanderson returns to this setting and characters.
To make a long review short, Arcanum Unbounded is a collection I would highly recommend to any fan of Sanderson’s work.

Sanderson fans won't be disappointed
Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2017Aimed directly at voracious Sanderson readers, this collection fills in gaps from all over the Cosmere. It combines excellent short stories in a number of his Cosmere worlds with descriptions of the systems and some background that helps you understand how the worlds relate. If you have never read Sanderson before, I would recommend starting elsewhere - Warbreaker or Mistborn: The Final Empire. But come back to this one later, once you have been pulled in, and you won't regret it. disappointed
If you follow Sanderson's work closely, the odds are you have already read a number of these short stories. The only truly new one, Edgedancer, is quite good. A stormlight novella, but in a different tone than the others, as it focuses on Lift, a character who tries to live life... differently. Mistborn: A secret history is also excellent, but don't read it until finishing the original Mistborn trilogy, massive spoilers.
And the excerpt from the White Sand graphic novels has me excited to get to those; I don't normally do a lot of graphic novels, but this one seems like it will be excellent.
The hardback is beautifully done; well illustrated, attractive, and solid. Gave a copy to my brother, made a great Christmas present.
I have also listed to the Audible audiobook, and while the content is just as good I was not a huge fan of the narrators. Kramer and Reading alternate sections based on the gender of the primary character being focused on in that story (or part of the story). They each do significant sections at a time, but the change of pace was more jarring than helpful for me.
Overall, an excellent addition to your Sanderson collection. Don't hesitate if you enjoy his work.

Sanderson Delivers!
Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2016Sanderson is best known for writing HUGE fantasy novels. Brandon Sanderson is a born winner. It seems everything he tries his hand at is a home run! That is the case with this collection of shorts. I had already read every entry here with the exception of the new Stormlight Archive story Edgedancer. Stormlight is already my favorite series running right now. Will just say I have read the current books a couple of times. :)
Edgedancer is great. It runs 40 thousand words. It is about roughly about 10 percent the length of one of the main novels. The main character of it is Lift, who you will have met in one of the interludes of Words of Radiance. Her story here serves many purposes. First and foremost, it is just a heck of a lot of fun. Next it expands on the world that this series takes place on. Last it is a good primer for book 3. Helping curb my appetite for Oathbringer along was worth the price of admission. If you liked Lift's awesomeness in WoR then rest assured this will not disappoint.
That isn't the only reason to buy this book. The other stories contained are incredible. My personal favorite is The Emporer's Soul. It is one of my favorite pieces of fiction of all time!
Thanks for reading my review! If you have any questions on my review or the contents of the novel please post me a comment.

Collection of shorter Cosmere stories
Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2025Format: HardcoverApparently this is the UK release version. From what I can tell, it has the same content, just different cover. Which I liked better anyway.
I am a Sanderson fan, I think his stories are engaging and I enjoy the interconnectedness of the Cosmere world that he’s building. But many of his books are sooo long. This is a really refreshing collection of shorter stories from the Cosmere that is more approachable while maintaining the vibes of his longer epics.
You can read them in any order, so I enjoyed jumping around this book. It’s a great intro to Sanderson, or a nice complement to his larger Cosmere arcs.

Phenomenal and Diverse Fiction
Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2020Format: KindleThere was a lot of content in this book. The first thing that you must know is that a lot of the content will be meaningless to you if you have never read another Brandon Sanderson book. At most only two or three of the stories will make any kind of sense, and none of the inter-story commentary will make any sense. As it is, I loved all of it. Stories from every part of the Cosmere (the over-arching universe that Brandon-Sanderson writes his Tor books in) can be found here, including all Cosmere short fiction published elsewhere. I read the Kindle version, which I admit made reading the White Sand graphic novel challenging (i skipped almost all of it). Otherwise, I can vouch for the quality of all of it.
My personal favorites were Edgedancer and The Emperor's Soul, with the Mistborn short story set in the Wex and Wayne time period and the Elantris related short being my least favorite. Brandon Sanderson's true short stories have always been a weakness of his, although I believe his long short stories and novellas are true works of art (Sixth of Dusk and Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell are both also phenomenal, as is the Eleventh Metal).
One of the best parts about this collection is that so many of these pieces feel completely different. Some of them have clear good guys, while others do not. Some feel like epics that have simply been shrunk, while others feel like intimate character portraits. One even feels like a small piece of a running serial from an Victorian pulp paper. Whatever you're looking for, you'll find it here.

Good reference point for Sanderson's other novels
Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2017A collection of excerpts from novellas and novels alike. All existing in the same universe. All connected in one way or another.
Now, don't go thinking this is everything crammed into one book. No, no. Not quite. You're not exactly reading all, or nor in their entirety, of Sanderson's books here, but his "excerpts," shortstories, novellas. The Emperor's Soul is not in its complete form here, only it's excerpts. If anything its a shorter version of the novel itself with chapters cut out for faster pace. Granted, however; I have not read the Emperor's Soul yet. The graphic novel White Sand is the same thing, as well as Elantris. If you were expecting to read everything in their entirety, then don't buy this book. You could be disappointed.
Regardless, I did find Arcanum Unbounded to be enjoyable. I haven't read many of Brandon's novels. Stormlight Archive being the only one so far. So it was nice to get a taste of his other books. Arcanum discusses the Cosmere, the author's universe, and the different forms of magic in each of the planets that dot it. It gives nice little explanations of each planet before the story within them. Brandon's magic is new and refreshing from the standard elemental or -mancing types of magic that are rampant in most, if not all, fantasy/fiction novels. From Forgery, copying objects by transforming something else with Soul Stamps, to Surgebinding the gravitational forces for Lashings on yourself to fall through the sky or move other objects in the environment.
Chapters of Mistborn that have not been included with the novels are present here in the point of view of Kelsier. Without going too far, two of the Sixteen Shards of Adonalsium are discussed here. Don't read that part if you haven't read the Mistborn series yet. The debut of the Stormlight Archives' novella Edgedancer is also in the collection. I really enjoyed Lift's character in her interlude chapter in Words of Radiance. It was great to read her own novella of her unique perspective. I hope to read much much more of her in the future Stormlight books.
For a person who has read most or all of Brandon Sanderson's novels, Arcanum Unbounded delivers very little to the table. Oh, sure. Mistborn's new chapters of Kelsier and Edgedancer are new, but thats about it. But to a person who HASN'T read most of them, then this is a decent book to try out or get a taste of his various novels to read later. Several novels are on my list now thanks to Arcanum Unbounded.
Regardless if you've bought this book already or not, I do recommend for you to just go buy Brandon's novels to not only enjoy them (which I know you will) but to chase after Hoid. It's pretty fun that way if you choose to, althought it isn't necessary to enjoy each of the novels. They are wonderfully separate in their own right.
