A wealthy lawyer, debonair ladies' man, consummate actor, and courageous gambler, Dusko Popov played the role of playboy amongst the top echelons of British society to become one of Germany's most trusted spies. In fact, he was one of Britain's most successful double agents, and, some say, the inspiration for James Bond. With full access to FBI and MI5 records, along with private family papers, his incredible adventures can now be told authoritatively for the first time.
Recruited by the Abwehr in 1940, 27-year-old Popov immediately offered his services to the British. His code-name was Tricycle. Throughout the war he fed the Germans with a constant stream of military 'intelligence', all vetted by MI5, and came to be viewed as their most important and reliable agent in Britain. But when he was ordered by the Abwehr to the United States to report on the defences at Pearl Harbor, J. Edgar Hoover, Director of the FBI, failed to heed his warnings, distrusting all spies and detesting Popov in particular, whom he considered to be 'a moral degenerate'.
Facing the danger of exposure, arrest and execution on a daily basis, Tricycle went on to build up a network known as the Yugoslav Ring, which not only delivered a stream of false information to Berlin but also supplied vital intelligence to the Allies on German rocketry, strategy and security. After the war Dusko Popov was granted British citizenship and awarded an OBE. The presentation was made, appropriately, in the cocktail bar at the Ritz.

I loved it and I'm a picky reader!
Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2015I'm a horrible book reader. If I get bored too easily or my interest is not piqued, I quickly move on to something else. I've started many a book only to stop after a few dull chapters. I do this because I once read a book right through, waiting for the good part, and it never got good.
This is sooooooo good a book! Best I have read in years and I doubt I will top it for a while. I'm glad I finally grabbed it off my wish list and took the gamble that it is a book well worth the effort. I wish I bought it long ago now. Stop reading and buy it! You'll be glad you did!

Acknowledged in fiction.
Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2020Unbelievable Dusko's exploits beginning before he turned 30. He played the game and lived his life on his own terms at a time the world was destroying itself. Hoover thought he was untouchable and he was until after his death when the sordid details of his life emerged.
Living in Serbia today I've been asking Serbians between 25 and 70 about Popov. Strangely less than 50% have ever heard of Dusko. Born in '51 I was in school in the US from the late 50s thru the 60s and don't remember ever hearing Popov's name. How could a man so pivotal for the outcome of WWII be made to disappear? Or more to the point why?
I have my thoughts why and it doesn't make either country look good.

Great Spy, Not James Bond
Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2020After reading several other extremely impressive works from Mr. Miller (Bare-Faced Messiah and The House of Getty) I wanted to dig deeper. This book was also a fairly impressive and entertaining read.
There is a solid WWII story arch based around Popov; that starts from a an interesting background story and develops well throughout the book. There are a few surprises, that come right out of the, "reality is stranger than fiction" territory.
Miller does well fleshing out historical situations, building intrigue, and keeping cohesion in a tumultuous, continent traveling, intrigue laced spy saga. His handling of interpersonal situations/major historical characters is quite adept, and you can often feel these characters come to life on the pages- both male and female.
The one thing I think it lacks its punch, action, and war time sense of urgency. Though the main character constantly flirts with these, he rarely has to interact with them. Overall it was a solid , easy read, but lacked that bit of- BAM! one may want from a James Bond type story..

from a Happy Gardener who does not have too much time to read
Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2014This was recommended to my by dentist as I was interested in WW2 Thrillers and stories. It gave me a new insight and background on how spies lived and worked in such dangerous, eventful, and terrifying conditions. To be caught at any moment would have been a terrifying event and you would have to nerves of steel and the personality to go with it. Really enjoyed the book.

Truth Beats Fiction this Time
Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2014This amazing story will keep you up all night. It is the most intriguing spy story that you will ever read. Not even Le Carre could make this up. I am surprised that it was not made into a major motion picture..Producers, get on line, this is a timeless story.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 19, 2013Great read, based on historical research and tells much about many characters during the WW2 period. Popov's connection to James Bond is astonishing, so much as to be believed and since he mixed in the same circles and knew James Fleming, well that clinches it for me. It is to Dusko Popov (and many more in the book) that we owe a debt of gratitude for our own free lives so everyone should read this book!

Reviewed in Canada on January 11, 2013Well told and very absorbing. A short documentary of Duslo Popov's exploits during WW2 was shown on TV but it was not as well done as this book.
